Default JDM 03 STI Whine, rear diff????? help

Hi there, this is my first post and sadly its a techy question.

I have a JDM STI Imprreza 2003 I'm sure you folks will know that this car has the DCCD gearbox just like the UK cars from 05?

For the last week I have noticed a whine coming from the car. Where its coming from is a mystery.

It becomes very noticeable around 65-80mph on light throttle. If I take it out of gear it still does it but ever so slightly louder.

The car drives fine, gears all select without any problems and apart from that noise everything is spot on.

I took it to a local garage and he has said I could be the pinion bearing?

If I need a new rear diff what is the specs. Will a diff from any UK car from 2001-2007 be ok? Is there a difference between WRX and STI rear diffs of that year.

Please help.

You will need a JDM diff and not a UK one as the gearing is different (final ratio). Think these are a plated 180, but not 100% sure.

See if it can be fixed first, otherwise you can look at the breakers, grade a subaru for instance.

are you sure it is mechanical noise and not tyre noise as my oem tyres on 03wrx got very loud when almost worn and it all went ok after I changed them, I even questioned it when I bought the car from a dealer and they checked everything over and said all ok and must be tyres.

I really cant see it being the tyres to be honest but i will confirm that in a day or so as its getting new ones.

I have done a bit of phoning around and got some prices for a replacment diff. What i need to know is should the diff i buy be from a car with DCCD or will the JDM bugeye shape have the same rear diff.

Thanks

Before you shell out on a Diff, change the oil an siv through the old stuff for iron fillings. If none are present then it is fine.

I had a hum on my STi03 and did the above to make sure, before spending £000's - it turned out to be a noisey front wheel bearing. But it sounded like it was coming from the back.

Mine was found by a Subaru specialist who put the car in the air and then ran ot at low speed to listen for noise.

What tyres are you running?

On my MY03 Sti JDM when I was running Toyo 888's they made a funny whining.

Also, had wheel bearing issues but never a problem with the rear diff.

HTH.
