Ok, I know its in the wrong forum, but EVERYONE looks here!

Its about the sound recorder in Windows'98 - I have a 'line-in' on my sound card so can record sounds from an outside source - problem is, it only seems to record for 60seconds and i cannot for the life of me find out how to make this, say 4 minutes?

Pleeeeeeeese someone help!!!!

60 secs is the limit with MS Sound Recorder..

You will need to use a third party product to record longer sounds..

Right, anyone got a way to get a cheap easy program to record wav files??

Most soundcards come with software to do this for free. Do you not have the soundcard software installed ?

Have used cooledit before but this cost's multiple hundreds of pounds (and would be complete overkill for what you require)

 

If its the same as win 95 sound recorder you can record for as long as you like, or at least until your hard disk is full. If you make a recording (just hit record, there doesn't have to be a source) up to the limit and then hit record again the time period is extended. Keep repeating until you have the length of time you need then drag the slider back to zero, start your source and start to record for real.

 

It is possible to record for longer with Sound Recorder, you just have to do a bit of work first. Record a blank sound file (60seconds) and save it on your hard drive. Then insert the file into your open file and save that. You will now have two minutes of blank sound file. Do this again to get four minutes. Now, record your music files over this blank file.
Have a look at the software that came with your soundcard, you may find something suitable there.
Otherwise, check out download.com, shareware.com or tucows.com

 

another technique to realise the same effect...a bit quicker than actually recording repeatedly...

record 60 sec of rubbish and save the file to disk, then choose 'edit', 'insert file' and insert the file you just saved, save the file again and insert it once more - the file grows ...keep doing this until you have created a big .wav file of the length you require - then, as suggested above, move the slider to the beginning of the file again and record 'over the top'.

alternatively, buy yourself some proper software ;-) - I recommend Sonic Foundry's products - all excellent.

The soundcard is actually ON the motherboard apparently - it is a Yamaha type, if that makes any sense?

The web has thrown up a free one - Musicmatch Jukebox (I reckon it will take ages to download though?) my free web connection shuts me off after 2 hours

try a download manager Gozilla is one of the easiest and you can get it

 

Ps Forgot to say the reason i mentioned theese is because in most instances you can reconnect and resume a download

A 'plug in' soundcard normally has a software bundle, one on the motherboard probably won't. Not much use, sorry about that.

Suggest any old freebie one you can download, they'll probly use the MCI API anyhows so it'll work with any soundcard.

If I could be arsed I could probly knock you something up in about half an hour. (I can't)

Ps The fact that the Soundcard chipset happens to be soldered onto the same board as the processor / I/O etc doesn't make a crap load of difference, it's still connected to the bus in exactly the same way as a 'plug in' board would be. (Again not much use, but it might help to explain how this is done)

And it's free.

Haven't used it for ages but used to use it for getting audio tapes onto HDD (big files!)

Alternatively if you have Adaptec Easy CD Creator, you can use the Spin Doctor program.

Just need a bit of tweaking with levels, and away you go.
