Default Knocking noise/clatter ??

Hi

While out driving today, slowing down in second/third gear, there was a knocking noise that you could feel through the floor pan ( like something rotating hitting the chassis rail under my feet). It happened once, and was fine for a while, then happened again later for around 10 seconds. It feels like it's coming from the offside front shaft area. I can't see anything wrong visually, no excess play etc.

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

04 WRX wagon running 350hp.

I would start by checking the drive shafts.

Ok now its making a grinding noise when it does it. Doesn't go away when clutch is dipped so definately looking to be shaft related.
Is there anyway of checking these without removing them?

Hi, all inspected and no faults.
The car is now scrabbling/locking wheel when turning slowly on full lock. Makes no difference if its from cold or when warm, is this looking towards maybe a failing center diff ?
If so what are my options?

Hi

Interested to hear someones reply!

My UK 2000 turbo (std tune 75'000) does exactly the same on lock.

It is that severe that there is a large shudder through the car on each revolution of the front wheel on full lock, and it gets worse after only a 10min drive.

Can't use as I no its going to go bang!

I was looking at changing the box for a recon unit off the bay, but no one seems to no the gearbox codes, myn is HY-TY754VN1AA!

Does anyone no what the 754 and 1AA relate to?

Or even better sell me the appropriate box.

check this thread... the same thing hapened to me... am going to see david at api soon.. he said it might be something cheaper to fix than replacing a diff....

does it happen when going straight??? very little on mine. not when going fast

does it happen when u reverse??? yes on mine...

does it happen when u r starting to move from stationary at an angle either way??? HELL YES

No only when on full lock

Yes also in reverse (turniung)

Failed centre diff, for sure. Seen it all before, sorry,

Call me for a sensible solution. TY 754 types can be done in situ while u wait.

defo diff :i had it too on a different car ,also shaggy1973 had this on his last wagon or was it the one before or the one before or maybe the one before that lol .

Hi, might be a dumb question but would the center diff effect suspension, as in make the car twitchy/unstable ?

A perfect standard 4 kgs viscous one usually not. But if they fail, all sorts of odd things can happen, mostly to do with the car becoming rear wheel drive only. There is a 20 Kgs centre viscous that is used in rallying and that does definitely make the car torque steery on tarmac and road use.

Front diff failure can also make all sorts of crunchy noises and skipping of the inner wheels on corners.

Tight rear LSD's on imports, as they arrive from Japan, are horid and make the rear end very skippy on roundabouts. The Japs seem to like them locked up solid, which wears out tyres a treat and makes some wonderful [ not ] noises.

Hi David thanks for the reply's. When i say twitchy, i mean the car seems to be affected by drain covers and the camber of roads alot more than normal.
What is the best way to figure out if its front or center diff. As its intermitant this could possibly be quite tricky.
Im going to get it up on the ramp again and double check nothing is loose and then go from there.

I'd take a good look at the rear tracking. Or possibly just the tyres for that problem.

Set all wheels with just a touch of toe in and see how it goes.

Don't invent / expect a problem that may not be there, do the simple stuff first.

Ok will do, car is set up with 1mm toe in all round and 1.5 neg camber at the moment but will check this out when its up on the ramp.

Default Knocking noise from the front

I have a 1996 import WRX v-limited. I have a knocing noise when full lock left or right only when cold. Any ideas?
