Loud whine sound from K&N

I've had a K&N cone filter in my MY97 for a month or so. Everythings fine except when I decide to use the entire rev range I hear a very loud whining sound coming from the filter (I presume its that). It only lasts for about 400 revs then disappears.

I've gone over all the connections and nothing seems wrong with it.

Any ideas as to why it's doing this?

It'll probably be increased induction noise. If it doesn't sound too 'mechanical' I wouldn't worry but if it sounds really bad, get it checked out. I know that when I took the resonator box off my 93 WRX you get quite a lot of noise from the dump valve.

I get the increased air flow noise & dv noise, but this is an additional "WHOOOOMMPPPPP" noise at higher revs, say 4500 to 5000rpm.

It sounds like 100 people blowing over the top of a bottle if you get what I mean

It's is induction resonance where the velocity of the airflow sets up stahding waves - my HKS does it as well.

I thought the my97 had an intermittent problem with the dv spring.....causing the 'blowing over a milk bottle top' sound?

If so, get it swapped.

I'd guess the spring only, but maybe easier to swap the whole thing. On my99/00 they're easy to remove and inspect/clean/etc. - not sure on yours though?

Must be poeple with a spare OE one in their garage though

Just read the SIDC faq (couldn't open it at home yesterday - thanks NTL )

Dump Valves
There seems to be a recognised problem with the 1997 specification car's dump valve. This does not shut properly under boost and thus vibrates giving the sound similar to someone blowing across the top of an open bottle. It has also been likened to a steam train whistle or ship fog horn in extreme circumstances!. Meanwhile the 1998 model seems to have a totally revamped and larger blow off system, but I have had reports that the problem sometimes still occurs.

Question

With regards to noise - how much noise increase will I experience with an ITG air filter? I know they apparently don't sound as good as the induction kits, but I'd rather have the safety of the panel filter. I'm hoping to hear a difference to the factory filter though.

Any comments?

Unless you remove the standard induction resonator as well, you'll notice no difference...whatsoever

I might take the induction kit off now cause I can barely hear it

I've never had so many people turn and look at the car as I went through town!

I even scared a dog as I went past the owner didn't look too pleased

Someone reported incorrect fueling when driving in the wet, due to MAF water contamination - but I've run 2 cars over 100'000km year-round with no problems (using knocklink), as I guess so have others.

Just make sure that all the splash guards get refitted correctly and you fit a non-paper aftermarket filter.

Tony,

I've got an ITG panel filter in my car as well and no resonator pipework either. However, upon examining the filter recently I dicovered loads of crap on the bottom of it that must have came into the airbox though the standard hole. I'm going to put the pipework back in as soon as I get the chance and hopefully this will stop this from happening again.

IMHO if you want the noise, go for an induction kit. If you want better filtration without noise then replace the standard paper item with the ITG. Until I investigate further I don't want to say whether or not you'd be better off with or without the resonator pipework.

Thanks for the advice guys. Realistically, would any gains in BHP be the same with or without the resonator pipework? What is the purpose of removing it - just for the noise?!?

Couple of weeks back I went through two HUGE puddles (more like lakes) that washed up over the bonnet. Thought to myself glad I don't have an induction kit.
Not sure if it would have got wet or not, but I'm happier with just the ITG filter.

Tony - try it for yourself I found it gave a much quicker throttle response.

Rikki - an induction kit replaces the OE airbox, so the resonator may well be in the wing....but not connected to anything! The exception is if you fit one of the cold air pipes, then you must remove the resonator to make room.

I realised that the resonator is in the wing because I have removed mine but I was wondering what the deal was if you put an induction kit on: whether most people take the resonator out aswell as the air box.

Tony I have an ITG panel and removed resonator.

Took about half an hour - bit fiddly but nothing too difficult. Can hear the dumpvalve a bit more now. Worth doing I think.

Tony - AFAIK removing the resonator will make it louder - however I doubt that there are any gains over the standard pipework - and any small gains would not be noticeable. It might *feel* quicker 'cos it's noisier, but then again you have to put up with the risk that you'll get some crap in the airbox and this will start interfering with the airflow - as in my case

I like noise as much as the next guy (fully decatted system) but as I said earlier, I'm putting the pipework back in as soon as I get the chance.
