Strange engine whine?
Just got back home, gave the car some hard driving on the way home, and i have noticed a whining noise.
At first i thought that it was the gearbox, but i have noticed its not, its the engine as the whine is relevant to the engine revs. im hopefully going to do an oil change soon, but any other ideas on what else this could be?
Any help will be appreciated.
Cheers

Mine does it.
Changed the oil (not because of the noise, but because it needed doing!) and it made no odds, so rule that out.
Having said that, I never checked the diff oil...
I like the whining noise though, coupled with the turbo and the zorst, so not overly bothered until something goes bang. pulley and belt are D40'd and everything looks in order.

Have a close listen to the alternator, use the screwdriver stethoscope test,
the whine was related to speed
on mine it was one of the bearings.
Maybe CoB could do a search of my old posts, I did put up the part number for a replacement bearing from RS components, but I can not search my own posts!!

Right i've had a little look, and a listen. the sound is harder to hear when hanging your head over the engine bay, but it does seem to be coming from the alternator. my dad has suggested to spray wd40 on the alternator while the engine is running?
Does that sound correct?
Not meaning to doubt my dads abilities but just thought i may aswell be extra cautious.

Try both ends of the alternator, there should be a difference in the "sound" through the screwdriver.
my car is a MY00 last of the classics, so don't know if they have different alternators on other years.
The wd 40 might just clear out the last of the grease from the bearing and maybe make it worse!
