Default Turbo or paranoid?

I fitted a decat on monday and noticed tonight a whirring/whistle as the turbo starts to spool up its not a proper whistle but has a little extra with it (hard to describe) i think its always done it just not as loud. It has the TD05 on it which i know had a little bit of play in the shaft when i fitted it. Does this sound normal and what is the worst that can happen if my turbo lets go. Thanks

What about yer up pipe??

Have you a Cat in there?

I did, have whistling sound, hesitation then 1 day bang!!!

Got a new blower then 2 weeks later whistling, banger stopped working!!

Garage took the blower apart, bits of Cat from the up pipe were being sucked into the blower (hence the whistling) then jammed the Blades.

It's more common than you think.

Hope this helps

Regards

PS Since then, NOOO Whistling/hesitation

if youve decatted it this is normal to get the whistling, it does it all the time, but it is more pronounced when decatted as it spools quicker and thats what you here.

Thats what im hoping, but if the worse does happen will my turbo eat my engine, would rather spend another couple of hundred on new blower than a couple of k on a rebuild

I was under the impression that only the newage Impreza's had a cat in their up-pipe, hence the need for a remap when decatting over classics lack of required remap.

Evening Andy,

Still like yer brilliant Pictures.

The ammount of Garages that didn't know there was a cat there!!

Advice to the original poster, whip out the up pipe, if theres a Cat there, get rid of it.

Regards

I think you are being paranoid tbh.
The extra sound is probably the turbo which is always more audible after a decat.

So when you get a decat, you don't really then? As there is two cats in a system including the up-pipe?

I honestly didn't know that

What he said!

If it's not making any alarming noises, or smoking and the car is performing ok then it's just that the sounds are more audible after the exhaust mods.

There is only a cat in the up pipe on bug and blob eyes as far as I am aware. Even then not sure if it is only the WRX as opposed to the STi... there's always confusion about this on threads.

To the OP, I don't think you have anything to worry about mate. Mine makes a similar noise since decat, well more pronounced anyway it was always there.

As to what will happen to your engine of the turbo lets go... that I don't know and will leave to a mechanic on here to answer as opposed to someone who reads threads and tinkers with his own car at the weekend
