right thats it, there comming off !!!

second bumper wrecked due to them, this time i was reversing up a slight curb and AGAIN it caught the wheel and the wheel pulled the rear bumper off its bolt hanger thingy !!!

NOW aswell as removing the mudflaps and chucking them in the bin,,, im thinking of bonnet pins for attaching the bumper on the sides,,,, well its that or buy another rear bumper !!

anyone else fitted pins to a bumper before ?

Surely bonnet pins will look cack!

Never had a problem with mine, and they are LOW

 

you have to hit a curb on them and have them fold over under the wheel, last time was a post that sticks out at work,,, reversed over it then it hit thne went forwards and the mudflap wedged it from going past the bumper and ripped it off

pins MAY look ****e,,, but whats there to loose in reality as the bumper is scrap and i will be doing a fair few track days anyway

 

I know exactly how you feel. I reversed up a low curb a couple of months ago and it pulled the mud flap off pulling the bumper fixing holes through .

 

I did the same, rule of thumb...stay away from kerbs

 

Take the flaps off. They're horrid and ugly. Just can't stand them on Imprezas.

 

mate im taking them off,,,, only left them on as i was gonna run full slicks at the ring and they cover the wheels nice enough to hide it,,,, though i never bothered in the end

Yes done the same as you rear pasenger side twice and front passenger side once. Both times same kurb outside my own house ! Still waiting for the road to b properly tarmaced. Rear mudguard just snapped one of the holes easily repairable. Front mudguard actually twisted the front wing every so slightly as it caught under the front tyre (shut line on bonnet was uneven after that).
friend advised to fix them back with thinner bolts that 1/2 cut through so a weak point should they ever get caught the bolt just snaps and no damage to the car.

Me too.. Also outside my own house, the thing is my son done exactly the same thing with his some months before, told me to be careful and I still forgot.. Frightened the life out of me as it went with a bang, I looked out and could see I was miles away from the 9" gate posts which baffled me for a few minutes as I thought I'd hit them, then the penny dropped.. Only done it the once though, felt a right plonker

 

As a rally rep & having notoriously **** paint i'd have thought it's one the few cars that should have flaps!

As for the OP, try fitting them 10-15 cm from the deck & they're fine- I reverse up to a kerb every day without any probs

 

Unless you regularly travel on pebble strewn roads, there's no reason to have mud flaps, and I question the need for them especially as I've never had any stone chips down the sides of any of my 5 Imprezas.

How is the car a 'rally rep'?

 

I don't really like the look of them if I'm completely honest. I have just had some fitted as I was sick of the dirt getting up the side of the car! Now, a week on and its still gleaming!!!! badabadana I'm lovin it!

 

never noticed chips on mine either

infact i don't even have any stone chips on the wider rear arches (you would expect them to get a right battering to be fair)

 

Which i do ...my daily commute is 12 miles of rural B roads, mostly pot holed kerbless ones & some single track ...the kind of roads an Impreza *should* be driven on

What colour's your car Sticky? ...& who painted your flared arches?

I personally dont think they add or detract from the look of the car (which if we're honest is a pretty horrid looking thing anyway!) ...for me they just serve a useful purpose ...unlike your big wings

 

I will add they do keep the car a little cleaner when driven in the rain.

 

never had a problem & mine are well low.....mind I do remember pulling them off my escort back in the 80's

I've drive these roads often too, including some very poor single track roads in Ireland with grass down the middle, still no stone chips.

I don't know what car you are refering to, your statement was very vague. Have you a certian specific car in mind or the Impreza in general? If it's a generalisation of the marque then it's a 4 door saloon and far from a rally car.

FWIW I had mudflaps on a 22b I had. If I hadn't of sold it I'd have taken them off as they totally spoilt the look of the car and they were rubbing on full lock.

 

& How long have you been in Ireland now?

vague? all group a/n cars required homogalation until '97 & iirc that meant a run of 5000, so all Impreza's upto that point 'could' be argued as rally replica's (sharing engine, drivetrain, shell etc etc) along with Integralés, Escort Cosworths, GT4's etc etc ...not sure what the requirements to homogalate a WRC car was/is, but seeing what Peugeot & Citreon had to build to qualify then im guessing not much ...but as far as im aware a group n car still requires a production run, so from that i'd say that most Impreza's could be classed as rally replica's ...& yes im well aware of the difference to an actual rally car ($100K-$1000K normally!)

might explain why one of your previous Impreza's didn't suffer from stone chips then!

I'd also add that 'rally flaps' were a japanese factory fit option on certain classics ...along with a decal kit, but i wont go there

 

Flaps are cool & each to their own.....I don't like Lexus lights but I don't go on about it....

 

My previous STI did not have flaps fitted when I bought it at 18 months old and the sills were covered in stone chips. I fitted some flaps and it didn't pick up any more in the time I had it. When I got my current STI, I fitted some more as I want to keep it nice and chip-free, plus I like the way it looks with them... it's down to personal choice really.

 

keep ripping my off due to the curb but have got it sorted now. i have to pull up to the curb get out and lift the mud flap on to the curb.

 

I still don't know what Impreza you're refering to Do you have a 'rally rep' Impreza in mind or are you talking about an unmodified Impreza? A replica in my book is a car done up to look like a rally car not a standard Impreza. There's probably a standard roofrack factory fit too for certain models, but I won't go there either


I'm not in Ireland right now, got back to the UK on Wed morning. After what, 10 years of Imprezas I've only had one flapped for 6 months and totally hated it, and still no stone chips on the side

Horrible sound! and an unwelcome bill!

Wouldn't be without them though; they really do protect the flanks of the car....and I think they suit the Impreza!

well mine are off the rear, keeping them on the front though

aint bothered about stone chips tbh as the car gets a pasting and its ment to be a toy to relive my agression anyway,,,,, i tend to tailgate cars at high speeds when convoying with mates ( hence ive chipped my screen and 2nd foglamp glass in 3 months )

loosing a bumper is anoying though as i get dirty

resprays aint a big thing considering im i got a few connections in the trade

 

Done the same thing to mine.Went with a right bang as well.

Was gutted at first but had a stroke of luck when i inspected damage as it had only broke the plastic clips that hold the bumper on and slightly bent the fixing point which i knocked back with a hammer. It did however totally knacker the bracket that the flap mounts on,pulling it through the pop rivets and twisting it.

Still think they suit the look of the car though so their staying.I'll just have to be more careful
