Default "Quality" eBay cone filter with hard pipe.

Bought one of these cheap cone filter and hard pipes for a mate, its for his 2003 WRX as his airbox was cracked. After fitting it idle speed would start hunting, also the management light has come on, read fault codes and system to lean is stored.

Heres the one...

New SUBARU IMPREZA WRX/STI 2001-2006 Air Induction Kit on eBay, also, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-Jun-08 16:00:30 BST)

Has anyone ever had a problem running the AFM in one of these hardpipes off ebay. Is it that or the filter it drawing in to much warm air from around the engine bay?

Hi mate I believe the air flow meter is calibrated to the diameter of the pipe it is fitted to. There may also be the possibilty that oil from the air filter is got to the air flow sensor and caused the problem other than that your mate may have an air leak that is nothing to do with the induction kit.

The AFM is fine as when the stock airbox was refitted the car ran as usual.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Either it has an airleak (unlikely), or the AFM's positioning in the pipe is such that the AFM is misreading the airflow (likely, the stock AFM is in a straight short pipe from entry, this is just after a curve that will biase flow to the outside, an elemental design error) and the pipe is useless unless you can try some 'fettling' to improve its location.

So if we maybe cut a bit of the hardpipe so the filter was closer to the afm should this solve the problem?

thanks
