I have a sunstrip on my car and a few mates have been stopped by the police and been told to remove them.

Does anyone (StuartH perhaps) know the legality of these things?

One person was told at the side of the road that if a windscreen wiper touches the strip then it is illegal. Another was told that it should not cover more than 25% of the windscreen.

My wiper touches my strip, but the strip is only about 4 inches (far less than 25%) and I can't believe it is illegal.

I have no knowledge of the law's standing, but common sense says that if there is going to be a rule then it should be 'not in the wiper area'.

that's just the way my brian works tho'

I don't own a scooby (yet ), but I think I can offer my experience anyhow.

I have a sunstrip on my Fiesta. It's been on for about 4 years now, and it also has a single wiper.

The wiper blade does actually touch the strip but it has passed 4 MOT's without problems.

As long as the strip doesn't obstruct the drivers vision any more than the sun visors would if they were down, you should be ok.

It's a bit of a grey area, alongside the likes of clear lights, cut down plates, QR race harnesses and suchlike.

Hope This helps!

i read about this 'size of sunstrip' in Max Power!!!!!! i know, no jokes please!!

it's in July 1998's mag!!
PAGE 126!!! AT THE BOTTOM
Q:VISORS
i want to fit a sun vistor like those fitted on the BTCC Touring Cars. Are there any rules and regulations governing how low it can go with the tint?

A:
yes, the MOT states a maximum depthof nine inches, but you should find this adequate anyway. for best results fit a nine inch green or blue tinted strip first, then lay a six inch smoke strip over the top. this looks awesome and gives a graded tint just like the real thing. alternatively slap a big MaxPower sticke front and back- you'll look like our Nissan.

thats what it says!!!!!!!!!!!!

you should have no problems......
i have front & back visors! not 9" down though, wipers do run over the visor!! so!!!!
not been stopped!!!!!
just waitin' now, ready and waitin' LOL

Salsa,

Cheers for the info.

Nick,

If I put a Ford sticker on it might slow the car down!

Just for info.

My local rag printed an article last summer about a "young speedy" who was pulled up by the local and charged for driving around with a sunstrip.

When the day came up for his court appearance the local didn't turn up - case dismissed!

Im not trying to insult anyone here, but does anyone else think that sunstrips are totally pathetic? I mean, all the Fiesta/ Nova lads drive around with all sorts of crap on there, and one **** in a Golf down my road has one so big he has to crouch to see under it.
What is the point of them? The thin, small translucent ones I can understand, they help block the sun, but so do sunglasses, otherwise, do people think they look good? or think they make the car faster? they are about as cool as stickers on Metro saying "Turbo" or something.
Again, sorry if I offended anyone, the comments were made specifically about young lads that think they can challenge anything else on the road, cause they have a sticker saying "Fast" or something, covering half the damn windscreen.
At high speed, you need all the available veiwing area to judge distances, spot corners, and look where you're going, so why blocking half the windscreen should make people think your car is fast, I dont know, does anyone?.

I have a suggestion to allow keeping your sunstrip - AND keeping it legal.

- just fit it at the bottom of the screen not the top.

Sorted (as they say in EastEnders - NOT that I watch it you understand, I'm just in front of the telly while Carolyn's watching it.....)

Oh dear, I must go, the goldfish is attacking the vicar again...

or better yet, buy some sunglasses, and put stickers across the top of those. That should block pretty much about the same amount of vision as a sunstrip, and it means you can look a **** when you're out of your car as well

Yeah, agree with IntegraR in some respects.

My strip is on an Evo 6 and many people have commented on how it finishes the car off.

However, have seen some horrendous looking strips on Novas, Fiestas etc.

Hell, you can do anything to an Evo 6 and have it look cool, that is one of the greatest cars ever to roam gods green earth.
You could cover the whole windscreen with a sunstrip, cut two eye holes in it, and Id still say the car is cool.
But hey, Evo 6's earn that right, they are fast, and I doubt even a 1.2 Corsa, with a sunstrip saying "I Kill Evo's" covering most of the windscreen, would be able to take you in a straight line.

I agree with Integra, IMHO Sunstrips first came about with BTCC, cos all the drivers are
1 short ***** and the sun gets in their eyes (Matt Neal excepted)
2 because they sit so low theyve still all the view they need.

Ive seen some mainly fiesta's I have to say that look bloody dangerous. Mind you I guess if the Kid is 14 he's gonna quite low in the seat too.

Sorry If Ive offended anyone, just aving a larf as Dave TS would say, guvnor.
