Default Gas guzzlers set to face £950 tax

The most polluting vehicles will face a £950 "showroom" tax that will come into effect from 2010.

The government is also introducing a new top band for the most polluting vehicles that emit more than 255g of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

I'm sure we will find out soon the pricing of sub 255g banding and 255g +

Yeah, the 06 STi has a carbon figure of 257g as well... typical.

Just had a look at the V5 for my 01 WRX and it's 242 g/km.
That means £210 again this year but a whopping £415 next year - how the hell is that justified?

Great!

Another reason to hang on to it!

Not only is it the best Impreza, it's the cheapest to run!

Yep, it is only cars register after March 1st 2001.
Just as well really, my cars only worth £5k or so and i'm going to have to shell out nearly 10% of it's value every year just on road tax. Would be even worse on a say 93 car worth £2k

All this is just making the Classic look more and more like the best choice!

I really cannot see myself changing for a long time now.

And if I ever do it's unlikely to be another Impreza.

I reckon over 3 years I'll be saving about £1200 in road tax compared to if I bought a brand new one!

It really doesn't make any sense this uber taxing of newer cars. Aren't newer cars supposed to be better for the environment yet these taxes will make people hold on to their old less eco friendly cars.

This could tip the balance for me buying a newage or a classic as a long termer.

BAND K (2009-2010) 201-225g/km £300

BAND L (2009-2010) 226-255g/km £415

BAND K (2010-2011) 201-225g/km £310

BAND L (2010-2011) 226-255g/km £430

UNLESS YOU BUY NEW IN 2010, BAND K (£550), BAND L (£750).

Just worked out, I pay around £1300 in fuel duty doing 12000 miles a year.
Top this with £415 VED and that makes £1715 a year just in motoring taxes.

If I switched to a car that does 35 mpg and attracted the lower tax of £115 i'd be paying around £1100 in motoring taxes.

Don't think saving £600 a year is enough to drive me away from the Scooby just yet

Yep - 16000 miles in 3 years - GAS GUSSLER please pay a fortune.

Some **** with a Prius doing 10 times that - HAVE A NICE DAY

Why the FEK don't they put it into fuel and do away with VED - The ones that use the most, pay the most.

Oh, I remember, they put it on fuel and VED then they can pay some layabout to stay at home tw@ts!

As said above, you pay more for newer, supposedly more efficient cars!

It certainly does, if you've got a pre 2001 classic, you are laughing.

If not you're f*cked!

MY00 Classics up in value?

They are the best, now they are the cheapest too!

I don't think I will be buying a new STi this year.

You knew it would be £400 this year though, £455 in 2011 is hardly breaking the bank is it? Not that I even remotely agree with this money making excersise!

I'm not sticking up for the robbing ***** but at least there is a couple of years grace and its only £950 compared to the £2000 rumoured, although that price will probably rise like no tomorrow once its introduced

New cars may be producing a lot less C02 by then anyway

This green crap is bollox and we are getting dictated to under the cause of it, thats what i don't agree with

in reading that it appears that upto 2006 all subarus will max out on band F, so just need to avoid any newer than that, as the £210 is what I pay already, just is a bit confusing with 3 different bands for tax dependant on year. Looks like I will be keeping my 03WRX for quite a while.

What will happen is the cars will get greener - they will need to to find buyers.

So, it could have the desired effect?

That £950 will be far higher once 2011 comes around.

So basically, most people are probably going to hang on to their older models.

Makes you wonder what this will do to the sales of the already shaky new Impreza!

here's an idea

if everyone in the country refused to pay car tax, what would the goverment do about it ????????

stick it on petrol duty???? ,as we need it to run our cars, thus balancing the cost of mr 60000 miles a year man compared to mr OAP nip to the shops once a week, why should mr rep mobile pay the same as mr OAP who probably does about 100 miles per month max ?????

yep people say that the higher milege driver pays more due to fuel duty, but does it really balace out the costs against bracketing of car tax ????

for one,i aint paying £750 a year to tax my sti,it aint happening,i will just diclare the car as sorn, and take my chances with a stop fine (no tax ??? £60 fine ?????)

i do not agree with uninsured/untaxed/un-mot'ed cars on our roads, but that figure is just pure theft and totally unjustified

gordon brown "SUCK MY C**K" you fat greedy T**T
