The most polluting vehicles will face a £950 "showroom" tax that will come into effect from 2010.

The government is also introducing a new top band for the most polluting vehicles that emit more than 255g of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

I'm sure we will find out soon the pricing of sub 255g banding and 255g +

Just had a look at the V5 for my 01 WRX and it's 242 g/km.
That means £210 again this year but a whopping £415 next year - how the hell is that justified?

Yep, it is only cars register after March 1st 2001.
Just as well really, my cars only worth £5k or so and i'm going to have to shell out nearly 10% of it's value every year just on road tax. Would be even worse on a say 93 car worth £2k

All this is just making the Classic look more and more like the best choice!

I really cannot see myself changing for a long time now.

And if I ever do it's unlikely to be another Impreza.

I reckon over 3 years I'll be saving about £1200 in road tax compared to if I bought a brand new one!

It really doesn't make any sense this uber taxing of newer cars. Aren't newer cars supposed to be better for the environment yet these taxes will make people hold on to their old less eco friendly cars.

This could tip the balance for me buying a newage or a classic as a long termer.

Just worked out, I pay around £1300 in fuel duty doing 12000 miles a year.
Top this with £415 VED and that makes £1715 a year just in motoring taxes.

If I switched to a car that does 35 mpg and attracted the lower tax of £115 i'd be paying around £1100 in motoring taxes.

Don't think saving £600 a year is enough to drive me away from the Scooby just yet

I'm not sticking up for the robbing ***** but at least there is a couple of years grace and its only £950 compared to the £2000 rumoured, although that price will probably rise like no tomorrow once its introduced

New cars may be producing a lot less C02 by then anyway

in reading that it appears that upto 2006 all subarus will max out on band F, so just need to avoid any newer than that, as the £210 is what I pay already, just is a bit confusing with 3 different bands for tax dependant on year. Looks like I will be keeping my 03WRX for quite a while.

if everyone in the country refused to pay car tax,what would the goverment do about it ????????

stick it on petrol duty???? ,as we need it to run our cars,thus balancing the cost of mr 60000 miles a year man compared to mr OAP nip to the shops once a week,why should mr rep mobile pay the same as mr OAP who probably does about 100 miles per month max ?????

yep people say that the higher milege driver pays more due to fuel duty,but does it really balace out the costs against bracketing of car tax ????

for one,i aint paying £750 a year to tax my sti,it aint happening,i will just diclare the car as sorn,and take my chances with a stop fine (no tax ??? £60 fine ?????)

i do not agree with uninsured/untaxed/un-mot'ed cars on our roads,but that figure is just pure theft and totally unjustified
