Question Coilpack confusion ???

I may be missing something here but not all turbo/WRX/STi ignition systems are the same are they? I've read a lot about 'coil packs' and have seen pictures of them but my MY97 STi Wagon Import has what i would call standard looking HT leads running from a central 4 plug box positioned in the middle of the inlet manifold . I am just looking for some clarity from all you technically minded Scooby people as to why this differs from others with a 'coil pack' setup? Has it something to do with the year of the car? Thanks in advance....

yes

92~96 is coilpacks on plugs and a separate ignitor
97~98 is like yours with a twin coilpack mounted in middle of inlet manifold and a separate ignitor
99~00 has twin coilpack off to one side with ignitor built in

Thanks JGM for that info...One more thing if you don't mind, are these units (on my Wagon) prone to problems like some 92-96 cars and if so is identifying them easy?

I had but found that the intercooler outlet pipe from the turbo had come abit loose and was causing a small boost leak...

PM for you JGM
