Default Whining 1st gear.

hey folks, bought my impreza catalunya (P plate) a few weeks ago and its developed a whine in 1st gear, now if it was just a little whine i wouldnt be as bothered but it seems to be quite loud.

if you select 1st and drive, as you let off the revs (over run?) its whines loud even when the clutch is pressed, now in any other gear its fine but i have noticed as your driving along if you push on the gear lever side to side it does make little whining noises, i think it has a quick shift on it but im not to sure as ive not driven any other impreza's so i was thinking could this be part of the problem? maybe its not selected properly or somert?? or maybe the box is just knackered.

well im a little stumped so thats why im asking you guys, any advice would be great, plus prices on box/clutch's.

cheers in advance

brevy

Sounds like a tired first gear simply to me. A rebuild on exchange is about £750 +vat iirc at Welcome to the API website
They do a lot of boxes a week including mine last year.

API do a great clutch package @ about £350 ish.
Best call David there for the real prices.

its done 56000 miles, come off a standard car with a rear end smash. i bought it for mine because mine was whining in every gear, but it turned out it was the wheel bearing lol

It doesnt make sense that it still whines when the clutch is depressed are you sure its not the clutch release bearing making the noise

dont think its that, cause when its ticking over and i press the clutch theres no noise, and same when its not pressed.

like i said its only 1st gear with the clutch pressed in or out, what i have noticed though is if your coming down the gears and try to get it into 1st, say in slow moving traffic it whines as if im going too fast for that gear, which im not like lol..

all the other gears dont really whine but if you move the gear stick side to side as your driving you do get a little whine.. thats what made me think maybe its something to do with the linkage?? i may try a new one of them for piece of mind and also try fresh oil.

Its allways worth changing the oil as a first resort, cant see it being the linkage ... it sounds like it must be a gearbox bearing or 1st gear/synchromesh issue.
