Default Strange noise when lifting off..

Hey all,

I've got a weird noise coming from my car (04 WRX) when I lift off (it's not all the time, it's very occasional, but it's worrying me)
It has happened both times when I floor it in third up to about 5krpm, and then lift off. It's on the left, and it's like a loud screeching noise, which happens immediately after lifting off, and then keeps going stopping for a bit, and going again.
It doesn't sound like something loose, it's hard to explain !

Possible ideas?

Regards,

Kosta

I have a VTA, so I know it's not that. It's more of a high pitched rattle, it's weird it hasn't done it again now, but I bet it will in a few days !

Could be a small split in a boost pipe. They can screech when the pressure is up.

ok it's done it again on my way home, but under throttle this time... I popped the bonnet to have a listen and it's there very faintly when the engine is ticking over. Could it be the cambelt tensioner or anything ?

Edited to say it sounds like it's more coming from the front of the engine.

Definitely doesn't sound like a belt slipping. Sounds more like a rattle, very high pitched though!

It doesn't sound like a headshield.. would the pulleys make this kind of noise, or could it be a sign that the cambelt is coming off?? I just have a feeling that this is going to end up costing me a lot if it's serious.

is it costly to replace? Something I could do myself seeing as I've changed cambelts on previous cars?

The tensioner will cost £80-£90 + labour if you dont do cambelts yourself , It might not be the problem, im just saying from my experience

The only problem I can forsee when taking it to someone, is that the noise won't happen! So I don't want to be paying someone to tell me there is nothing wrong if you understand. So I'm just trying to narrow it down, I think over the weekend I'll take the belts off and have a look look at them, but at 38k miles I would think it's not them.

Take the covers off and see if you can pin point the Noise whilst given it some gas

having a garage take a quick look at the car shouldnt cost you anything depending on where you take it. to a subaru dealer they will ask you to book the car in for diagnostics. try taking it to a local garage. just ring up and say i just want to know what the problem is have you got 5 minutes spare to have a quick look please. ill bring it back to you honest if theres a problem, i just want to know what the problem is first and if i should be driving it how it is.

then get them to take a look and take it somewhere cheaper or do it yourself.

Well, reading through the thread it is possible you have more than one noise...one with normal engine running and one with boost up? What I'd do is change the dump valve back to oe and see if it still makes the noise when lifting off from boost - this is where my finger would point first if I had noise during lift off. You can also remove all boost pipes and clean/check them over...worth doing before getting someone that wants green stuff per hour.
