MY03 Keyfob fails to work
I have the 2 keys for my 2003 Impreza STI and have been using just one fob for 18 months. The ones that look like this……

I’ve come to use the spare one and found it dead. I’ve replaced the battery but it still wont work with the car. I’m assuming it could have had a dead battery in for over a year. Will this make it loose the pairing with my car?
Any ideas what I need to do to get the second fob working?
Thanks in advance, Carl.

Try this:

I believe the alram units are the same from MY99-07 so this should work.

My friendly dealer (Gatwick Subaru) checked and reprogrammed my keys for FREE when one lost its coding! You can but ask.......
The button on one of my keys didn't always work so I used some electronic switch cleaner on it - its much better now.

Had a similar fault, using key one minute then went to unlock doors and nothing, the key had died ( could'nt start car either
).
So done the usual got the spare key, which worked perfectly, took the faulty one to nearest car spares and got a new battery, fitted it and still nothing
.
Phoned Days of Chelmsford who then said ' subarus have a habit of losing their code, if it's lost the code it will be £25 to re-programme if not then it's under warranty so free '.
Not too happy about being charged but the long and short of it was that the circuit board in the key had gone up the swanny so no charge
.
Just thought it might help.
Mark.

Thanks everyone.
Does anyone know if the programming sequence in the link posted by joey_turbo works for sure on a 2003 model?
I’m very wary of touching the keypad as I don’t have the original pin number (I believe I may be able to get it from the supplying the dealer) and I really don’t want the car immobilised!
Failing that it will probably be a visit to local dealer to ask nicely.
Mark or Francis – Did you notice if the dealer had to plug in the select monitor to programme the key?

I searched most of Sigma Sam or OE Sam's posts to find that link. In a couple of his other posts it did say that 99-07 alarms were the same. IF you have a UK car (which you will to have that alarm) and the * and # buttons on the keypad, you will be fine.
But as you don't have the PIN anyway, you may as well go to the dealer. Unless you have another working Key Fob, then you can reset your PIN (see the same link) and then program your new/old fobs again.

Ok – result – maybe!!
Cheers joey_turbo for having a search for me!
Just spoke to the supplying dealer and I’ve now got the original factory pin code.
Also found the instructions for programming the keys. For those that don’t know (like me!
) it’s in a separate booklet to the large user manual.
The instructions it gives are the same as Option B in Sigma Sam’s post (i.e. programming with the pin code), so I guess there’s every chance Option A will work too if the code has been reset since leaving the factory.
If all else fails, apparently the dealer can recover or reset the code with a select monitor anyway.
One piece of advice the dealer did give me was, when changing the key fob battery, do it straight away as it doesn’t take long for the fob to loose its memory.
I’m still chickening out for now though as I need the car this week and could do without me pressing a wrong key and immobilising it.
Will give it a go on Sunday.
Thanks for everyones help.
