Have been advised that the Nokia phone can be set up as radar detector - instructions below.
Worth a try I suppose

I think I know which forum this thread will be heading for.

Which end of the phone are you supposed to point out the windscreen to do the detecting?
I would hate to think I had wasted hundreds of pounds on a detector when I could have used a free phone.

Judging by the number of >>>'s it's done the rounds on e-mail...

It certainly adds an icon and the 5 zero's to the display, as to whether its a radar detector I've no idea - I very much doubt it. It probably drains the battery quicker or something other equally as useful !!

Kevin.

The menu option to do this on mine has been deleted when Orange crippled the phone.

Perhaps it's a laser detector and you have to point the IR port out of the window

I don't know about using a Nokia phone as a radar detector. What I do know is that my radar detector is annoyingly good at detecting mobile phone masts. So there might be something in this crazy idea after all.

Auto Express mentioned this last week. They say police are investigating the claims, but don't say which phones. The interesting aspect of this is that apparently the phenomenon has been limited to Melbourne, Australia.

In the previous weeks Auto Express (as you can tell by now I read it) ... they did a top 100 gadgets thing .... and on the radar detector front all the top four slots went to Bel products ... they said they were by far the best .... unfortunately haven't got all the details on me as to which models but seem to remember the top one came in at about 500 quid.

Apparantly if you point the phone at the police car you can send you ring tone to the siren via IR.

You can be chased by coppers playing the mission impossible theme or the simpsons.

Just bought Nokia 8850 yesterday. Just this minute tried the radar gimmick and I have an icon of a radar and five zero's next to it permently on the screen. Haven't been able to try it out yet.

Going to see the Villa tomorrow - pass a few cameras on the way. Will let you know what happens.

Yours hopefully

Tom

It really does work! It's a miracle!! Nothing less... a minute after trying this wonderful feature - i typed 666 just to see if the wonder would show with any digit- my mother in law rang... the sound from my Nokia was horrifying and it vibrated like mad! Gonna try 007, maybe Sean Connery will show! When you type 044 the UK will explode according to the official Nokia website and when you type 00000 your phone will act as a speedtrap detector!!

OK OK OK

As a side issue I have heard of a service in the offing to alert subscribers to speed cameras.

Everybody knows how you can track Mobile phones by which cell they are in, well a new service monitors your position then SMS's you if you are near known GATSO's (much like the GPS solution of mapping the positions of GATSO's and alerting you when you are within 200m)

Interestingly the new(ish) laws being put through by our boys in blue designed to stop *all* devices used to circumvent speed detection equipment could cover this device as well, making it technically unlawful to have a phone in the car!!! But then if you had a piece of paper with the locations written down that would be technically enforcable.

Sh*t why don't I just hand over my licence and £2000 now??

Hmm, so while you are groping around in the door pocket for your phone to see who SMS'd you.... flash, flash.

Better to get a GPS based device...

Of course we are only likely to find them near potentially dangerous bits of road, we are never likely to find them at the bottom of a hill hidden behing a sign or anything are we??

DazV,

Ginola not played for Villa recently as been injured. He played alright on Saturday though.

Is he worth £3m though? In my opinion no. He was just a big name to buy in the summer to encourage more people to go to see the Villa.

Cool

Daft question maybe.... but how, once you have turned the phone into the most accurate speed trap detector known to man, do you return it to the normal display?

Cheers

Mick

Having gone thru the menu's on my phone and carried out the instructions my phone shows the so called "Radar" icon and 5 zeros.

Yesterday having seen some cameras flash on the other side of a dual carriageway, I thought..aha..turn around and see if this really works. I did one better. I walked past the camera that was "ON" and flashing regularly at passing speeding motorists and hey presto.....IT DOES NOT WORK.

Me...I am disallusioned. Just wanna revert my phone back to normal.

Now there's a surprise
I still don't know how this thread has not been promoted to its rightful place, but for those that require it that sounds like concrete evidence to me.

If you stick the phone out the sunroof on a long broom handle, you will find that it does actualy work. When you drive under a gatso the top of the phone will make contact with the camera, smashing into hundreds of pieces, thereby warning you of the camera (unfortunately this only works on for one camera, as the phone will be subsequently useless).
