Could be construed as hindering the police in carrying out their lawful duties - which ( in the right terminology ) is an offence. Therefore scoobynet could be done

Question

Maybe the person that posted did not know about the gentlemans agreement. I certainly never.

I don't know of any gentlemens agreements..not concerning reg no's anyway

I can understand not posting Joe Public's reg no but surely unmarked traffic cars are fair game? You'll note I say "traffic" cars, I'm in favour of the surveilance ones but think the traffic ones are nasty under hand money making schemes....IMO.

Naturally if Webbie requests that we don't post reg no's then I won't.

Some of the cars mentioned do not sound like traffic cars
These are the ones that I am concerned with.

I was going to post a link to a web site that published the locations of speed traps/gatso's and also Reg numbers for marked Police cars. That site no longer seems to exist. That could be significant. To be honest though, unless you have a photographic memory, you are unlikely to remember even the Reg numbers for cars in your area. Also, if you are driving over the speed limit (why else would you be looking for Police reg plates), I'm uncomfortable that you would not be concentrating 100% on your driving...

Apart from all that, I'm sure the Police take a very dim view of publishing Reg plates. What next? The home addresses of all traffic cops?

One of the reasons given for not publishing reg no's is that very often the police use the same unmarked cars for catching 'real crooks' as they do motorists. Hence publishing number plates could very well give the game away or even put a policemans life in danger.

Dunno if that's true or how likely it is, but it seems a reasonable precaution.

With Neil on this one - This has cropped up a number of times before. Unmarked cars can get used for a number of duties other than Traffic.

I think you'll find this is why the various motor magazines that list traffic cars only quote a portion of the number and *** parts out.

Cool

I wouldn't be too fussed about taking the numbers as the unmarked cars have more than one reg document and reg... they just change the plates from time to time.

Car description is fair game... or for example Blue Y reg BMW 330CI...

Don't see that you will remember the number and then by the time you have they will have changed it.

Fair enough, but i bet its very rare, everyone knows the cops nowa days are only interested in soft targets like us guys.

Unmarked traffic cars are underhand i.m.o so they deserve to be named and shamed!

Okay seen as it was a gentleman's agreement does this dispualify me as I am female????

Muppet mode off now

Much as I would love to spread word about police reg's etc, I am sure they do use them for other stuff (although 99% is probably speed related) and it would be preferable not to post them.

Customs and Excise have unmarked cars too...

It is mainly the drug squad that change the reg plates I believe.
You wouldn't find a drug car being used for speeders etc... I am sure.
I also thought that the cars although used by different crew and are very often running 24hours with different shifts, generally they are used for the same type of job though.

They can do what they like as it is pretty obvious that a drug dealer might notice a car and reconize some of the plate so switching them every so often or after you think you were spotted etc etc.. just DVLA has say three documents issued to the same chassic number.

By disclosing them on here you might uncover a drug raid which some people might appreciate but personnally I don't think it is worth the risk.

Personnally I think it is out of order to use an unmarked car for tracking speeders, and perfectly fine for tracking drug dealers.
If I were a drug dealer I might think otherwise so I guess if I did the speed limit everywhere then I would be okay with them using undercover cars... depends on your perspective I guess.

Anyone actually been done by an undercover car?

There always used to be a couple touring certain motorways and they were fairly obvious but were looking out mainly it seemed for the people doing well into the 3digit speeds... or other dangerous activites.
