Diamond in the rough?
Now back in the Uk and in need of a car for 6 months or so to commute to the other side of Stevenage from Northampton. Just started a new job, 3 moth probation, etc, etc...
Have been looking for a car for the ladt 10 days or so, up to a grand, diesel for economy TD so a ability to overtake, cheap to run, the usual stuff.
I start Monday and had no luck so far, looked at a few cars all dogs so far or any that look pronmuising are sold straigh away. I am not expecting a minter, low miles , immaculate, etc for the money, after and expect a workhorse of a car with high miles.
Went to see a 1998S reg Peugeot 406 GLX 2.1TD (not the 1.9). Got 134K miles on the clock up for 1200.00.
The car has 'some' history
Not expecting much really.
Well get down to Edgeware and the car is almost like new, couple of scratches and tiny shopping dents but bodywork is good, no signs of accident damage.
The interior does not look used, no wear and tear, the steering wheel is not even shiny in the usual places, it is like new!
Test drive, it drives like it has done less than half the miles!
The guy that owned it is a smart guy but a bit of an anorak in his twenties, libe at home with his parents. He uses it to coommute and has it serviced on the button, the missing history is that he had not got the book stamped (or so he thought) has receipts, in order for everything, and i mean everything.
He has saved up and bought a Merc C220 (the coupe thing with the glass roof) as he saw it a bought it on a whim (he saves his cash).
I buy the 406 for 995.00
get it home and go though all the paperwork only to fnd the service book oucked away on th handbook full of Peugeot stamps.
It may not be a top car or set the world on fire but nice to get a good used car from a genuine chap and for reasonable money.

Hey Paul
Nice to see you're back over, but I'm sure you're not
Thats quite a good era of Pugs with the TD. 406 is a good car. Get it optimised
Might finally get to meet up now you're back. Looking to get around a bit in my track 200SX so I might well be up your way
Take care
Neil

Paul,
Sounds like you've found a good one! The 406 is a good car, and I've had a few mates who've owned them and loved the comfort, economy etc etc It'll do exactly what you want it too, and you'll probably get more for it when you come to sell...........
All the best
Matt

Thanks for the coments chaps.
10 days on an 1k miles under its belt and i am getting around 44MPG with no problems (touching wood).
Neil - you are welcome to pop round anytime, we have a spare room if you need to stop over
Brendan. Loved the job and liked the pkace, sadly Jenny liked Dubai but not enough to give up the UK for. She has a good job and just promoted as well. I was not prepared to keep renting in Dubai and pying a mortgage in the UK and only see the kids every 2 months, it was not the what we wanted, so i came back and was lucky to get a job pretty much straight away. I am glad i went, it was an interesting experience and i would reccommend it to anyone.
Matt, I was never a big fan of French cars, this one has certainly changed my mind. The bulild quality seems very good 136K miles, no rattles or squeeks or worn out interior/exterior fittings The engine and gearbox seem sweet as nuts. I am very pleased.

Paul, sorry it didn't work out, but family is certainly more important than a job! TBH my wife would love to have the same power as yours but doesn't, so we'll be here for some years yet! (She's gradually becoming accustomed to being "kept", though it still grates occasionally.)
