Just sold my E46 M3 and as part of the px ive ended up with another one of these (172 first time round) and to be honest i think the performance and driving position are totally ****. I dont want go through the chew of selling it for something i like better as the reason i sold the M3 is for a business investment so any car of a similar value to the clio will be a dissapointment, plus it's going to be used as a (fun hopefully) runabout. So i was wondering is they anything i can do to make it any faster as i coudln't make my 172 any quicker so will this be any different ?

What do you mean you can't get it to go any faster?
£6-700 layout - Group N ECU, Decat, exhaust and induction/panel filter will make it noticeably quicker, well it did to my 172 Cup anyway. Running circa. 180BHP with the above mods, definitely feels it!

You can make it faster but it costs as for real gains circa 200bhp you are looking at inlet manifold, cams, remap, filter and exhaust. Have you got the Cup packs? If not, stick some Eibachs on it as well.

As it spends most of the time on road I'd say no.
As a showroom car, I think it's a great road and occasional track package. You'll just end up spending huge amounts of money for very little gain.
Already I've read about £700 for 8 bhp gain! You'd not even notice that....it would be more effective to lose weight, only fill the car half full and never have a passenger

Looks like weight reduction is the way to go then.
I really want to like this car i just feel it needs a bit more power, although at what it will cost for the small gains im not willing to pay so looks like im putting it on a diet.

Never owned one but driven one a few times, i cant see how you could alter the driving position radically.
Why not sell it and get yourself a brand new Panda 100HP, looks like a very nice little package. Wont win any drag races but seem to tick all the right boxes when it comes to driving. (according to all the test reports anyway)

I'd question that, I'm being conservative with my guess, my bro with the same mods made over 180bhp and a 14.1 1/4 mile. It also showed it wasn't all about peak power, his graph showed he was making more power/torque all through the rev range.
Comparing it to standard, it feels better down low, it seems to pull hard in any gear. But then the 172 Cup is light, so even a small gain can be noticed.
All IMHO.

As above..peak power gains aren't huge but it is through the rest of the rev range where it really helps
Obviously being NA it costs more to get a decent power gain but stripping it out is a nice cheap way of giving it a little more poke

mate, sorry to tell you this but you have bought a slug.
Mine was the worse car i have ever owned in every aspect, i sold it for a loss and got rid.
The Golf i have now beats it hands down.
Seats out, rsport ecu is the best you can do, but you can polish a t*rd !

but stripping a 182 wrecks it imo and will be difficult to sell on! get rid and swap it for a 172 CUP if you want a light powerful clio????
or even better, sell and get a vts or 106 gti and strip that as they are only cheap anyway and will be just as fast!

Talking of records, to set this one straight, what you are saying is that i can't express my experiences of owning a car, sorry my car at that point in time becuase you don't agree with it?

Better than being just a tool
![Lol1](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/lol1.gif)
You are slating all 172/182s based on owning ONE. Not exactly compelling empirical evidence is it?
Ok so you had a bad experience. Get over it. I had a crap **** the once but it didn't put me off.

Anyway, empirical, what the hell are you on about, how much more practical experience can you get than owning a car? Does that not entitle me to an opinion. Ex girl friend also had a normal 172, that was rubbish as well, engine mount here and a heat shield there. She sold it and part ex'ed it for a mini.
I can't see how you can argue against my experience to be honest.
Sorry to offend you and your beloved little tin box 172.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion Jonto but I wish you would put it in to perspective. Lots of people have bought them and on the whole just had a lot of fun with them. You can rag the **** off of them, work the brakes hard and throw them around and they just come back for more. Yes some rattle & squeak a bit & occasionally things go wrong and the dealers are worse than useless but they are cheap & they are French and nothing comes close for the money.

I bought a 172 new, and it was just bad...
Water ingress into rear seats
bubbled paint on roof and bonnet
electric window fell into door
rear bodykit was warped after 1 summer!
And to be honest I have no idea why I wasted my money on such a poorly built nasty buzzbox.
Another satisfied Renault customer.

I owned a clio 172 and covered 68,000 miles in it and loved every minute. For the money they are good fun. Get the Febuary edition of Performance GTI/ French cars. On page 68 they increase the bhp of a clio 172 cup to over 200bhp............ but for a shocking costs (including other mods) of £4750!!!
