Anybody else on here got the new shape passat in 2.0tdi guise???

Reason I ask is that i seem to be having no end of probems with mine.

In 12 months it has had:-

New climatic control unit
2 new engine cooling fans, both burnt out in May this year
Trim / dash rattles - several parts replaced to rectify
Diagnosis of engine warning lights on at least 3 occasions
Crashing, squeaking, grinding suspension - thus far still on-going
Drunk more engine oil that the exon valdez spilt
Opens all windows of it's own free will

It is currently in at the dealers, wait for it................... for

Another climatic control unit
Persistant engine warning message "Emissions Garage!"
Cluth bearing noisey / rumbling
Suspension on the front of the car (sounds like a broken spring) but it isn't
Front discs juddering

Fairly sure thats all I asked them to look at!!!!!!!!!!

So basically just wondering if I am on my own and have just got a complete and utter pup of a car that was built on Friday 13th .

Have searched about to see if any of the above are common and the only ones that spring up on a regular basis seem to be the Climatic control bobbins and the **** poor interior panels in terms of vibrations etc.

Any owners with good or bad experiences your comments and thoughts are most welcome.

I have an Avensis 1.8 T3X as a loan car at the moment and had to laugh as it is averaging 39.7 mpg on mixed driving - the passat only manages that on 80% motorway and 20% town / A-roads .

Sorry about this, but why on earth did you throw away your money on a POS car like that?

It could only be bound to give you headaches.......sorry to say it. VW lost all it cred with me a good few years ago!

It sounds like you have a poor example.

There`s a 2.0TDI Passat estate on our company books which I borrowed for a weekend of trips to the local tip when we were moving house.

It was solid, pulled well, did over 40mpg average over a weekend of short trips to the tip and as far as I know, hasn`t missed a beat in 30,000 miles of pretty unforgiving company car driving. Certainly the guy who has custody of it mostly raves about it.

Fortunately it is a company car and has covered 35,000 miles. The majority are motorway miles - not going inter-galactic speeds but by the same token not hanging about.

Don't get me wrong when it is working it is a great car but all of the above are starting to leave a nasty taste.

My parents have a 2.0tdi DSG. Had it for 13 months and 20k miles with no major problems. It has used some oil but nothing excessive. The climate problems and the fans are probably related, and maybe even the crappy fuel economy. Our Passat will average over 50 mpg at 70mph on the motorway, and even running 20 miles into town, 5-10 miles round town and 20 miles back home it will average 45mpg minimum.

Is your aircon unit working 100%, the 3 problems above seem to point the finger at an aircon fault.

A lot of the more recent VAG group cars seem to use rather a lot of oil, especially the 2.0 varients it seems...

I have a 2.0 petrol A4 and I would have expected it to never use a drop of oil, but it seems to frequently require a top-up of 17quid a litre fully-synthetic stuff How often do you need to top-up?

I'm also starting to suspect a faulty A/C unit as the car seems to steam up quite a lot when parked? Saying that VW's have use A/C units to Audi.

Poor MPG as well - I'm seeing just shy of that figure from a petrol...

If thats your own car and not a company car I'd be tempted to go into the dealers banging the drums and demanding a refund/replacement.

Car has used the best part of 7 litres of oil in top-ups , VW reckon thats not too bad , before the passat I had a 130bhp TDCI Mondeo - never used a drop and covered 68,000 miles in 20 months!!

Aircon is OK, just a shame the interior fan switch will choose not to work at all and generally when it is bloody freezing outside and you need to clear the screen.

The car is on a 3 year lease through Lex, so only another 23 months or so to go or 24,000 miles , see how quickly I can rack them up shall we.

Fuel econemy is crap to say the least and always has been, it has improved slightly over what it was when the car was brand neww but not by much.

I have now started banging the druma and a letter was sent to the relevant people detailing faults, missed appointments and also the fact I have 3 young kids running around in an un-reliable pile of crap.

I await the outcome or feedback but we are a fairly large client in terms of company cars so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I had a Bora Tdi 150 for three years, all these issues seem familiar:

Emissions light came on at least three times.
Radiator and air con fans failed twice, then fuse kept blowing.
Suspension clunked from day one.
1 litre of oil every 20k miles.

Must be a VW thing, good luck with the dealers!

in yA manual it says will use up to 1litre per 1000mile :P

So in that case I must have a good one as it has only used 7 litres as opposed to 30 + litres.

Lets be reallistic I think the 1 litre per 1,000 miles if I remember rightly applies to the running in period, I could be wrong, but I cannot check my owners manual as the car has now been with VW for 3 working days .

It seems odd that VW think that the excessive oil consumption of their TDi units is acceptable, why is it that other manufacturers can produce a diesel engine that has the same or more output but uses a tenth of the oil.

If I paid for the oil personally and at retail prices I would have forked out £120, I bet that cost is not factored into running costs in Whatcar magazine etc. Lets face £120 is an intermediate service, I can honestly say that I won't ever be gracing a volkswagen dealer with my presence ever again once this car has either reached the end of it's lease or been returned because it has achieved it's maximum mileage.

I would much sooner have a Mondeo, it might not have the badge or image and all that other stuff that really is not very important - but hey at least in my experience they are reliable cars.
