I've heard that one of the best mods to do is get the gearbox remapped. Gives it a more aggressive nature. Saying that I find that the gearbox on my C32 works a treat.
I might trade up to a CLS 55 AMG at some point.

So far, and I am only 5 days in, the gearbox is very responsive, especially in Sport mode. Mind you with all the torque it should be a responsive car anyway. The only crtiscism so far are the brakes; they are OK, but not brilliant, and do not inspire too much confidence, especially when needing to remove a lot of speed quickly!
Carbon brakes are an option on the brand new model, which I imagine cure this quite nicely!

The P1 went, and I really regret selling it; it was a great car. I still have the M3 Convertible - my fiance now drives that. The CSL was a great car but more of a 2nd or 3rd car and we have not got enough room on our drive for any more! The SL for me at the moment will be a great daily driver, and as DS mentions, at just under 2 tonnes, was never designed to really work on the track
