Default Why Is my engine overheating ??? *SIGH*

Problem number 982347892347.

Any ideas as to why my car temp gauge is sumtimes going just past 3/4 notch on the temp gauge? Though it could be the water levels so filled those up, it was on the low mark but now its fine, still doing it.

Its when im stationary really it heats up to that and then goes back down when Im driving for about 30-45 seconds, any other ideas to why its now started doing that? Previously it never moved from just above the first mark, about 1/3 up the gauge.

I had a similar problem a while back.
There was a leak in a coolant pipe which after some hard driving would cause the car to get air-locked and temperature rise when standstill, as with you it would only decrease when driving.

Get it checked to see if there is a leak if there is no leak and the the car is losing water, get a pressure test or hydrocarbon test done to see if the head gaskets are leaking or not.
It turned out that my Head gaskets began to leak due to the constant air-locks and the pressure of the increased temperatures.

Surely if it only happens when you're at standstill, yet goes back to normal when you're on the move, it must be a problem with the radiator? Probably blocked inside or something?

could be the thermostat, when the car is standing still it will need to open more, but if it jams then it wont open enough

hence problem..

you could take it out put it in a pan and boil it, it should open fully.

i would say it that or air lock

Model/year?

Though it could be any of the above, when was the coolant last changed?
Worst case, head gasket failure, check your expansion tank for hydrocarbons (oil film).

This is all over my head, If i could actually learn anything, it would be the language of cars and get a degree in subarus. Its an 03 JDM STi.

I have only had the car around 2 weeks so not sure about the coolant. I dont think it is the head gasket because there is no sort of film you are talking about, and if it has the same symptoms as the rover t series engine head gasket failure then it doesnt look like its gone, yet.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will find out how to do the above and crack on!
