Just seen some of the specs for the new Jag X type. 190 or 240Bhp, 4WD, 18 inch wheels and rumours of a 350Bhp one. Plus it's not a BMW.

Saw this in the Evening Standard last night, very nice and a sensible price range - £22,000 to £33,000 from memory.

However, from my view point it is only good because it means they are one step nearer confirming they will build and sell the F-Type. The people on the Jaguar stand at the NEC were fed up with enquiries about it on the first Friday when I went. If Ford don't build it there will be uproar

Read the spec for the X Type and the good news is that pipe, slippers and red nose are all standard, although a fat belly is an optional extra

The new Mondeo's chassis tweaked by Jaguar with 4WD would be no bad thing.

Actually thinking about it a 4WD mondeo based chassis would make a good? basis for a mondeo cosworth.

Rear diff and transfer case are Visteon, driveshafts are GKN. Worked on the X400 for nearly 2 years and it's a genuine Jaguar programme rather than a Ford run programme. Look forward to the coupe, convertible and 'R' version!

I thought that yesterday on TopGear they said that the X type was the fastest 'drawing board to car' Jaguar ever. Is 2 years a lot shorter than normal?

Iain,

Have you any info/ specs for the R version. Power output, changes to body over standard (pictures ?!!), lead times etc. If it is genuinely a competitor for the M3 then I'd be strongly tempted. </img>

The last project Jaguar did was the XK8, which took 7 years I believe! The X400 programme followed a Ford-type project management process which Jaguar used to suit their needs. The whole thing was run by Jaguar personnel. The 'R' version will have the traditional larger wheels, brakes and around 300 bhp, although that will be tough 'cos the engine package is so tight! The quality and style of the interior will be like nothing in it's class. It may not be fastest in it's class but the dynamics certainly should be!

In answer to your question about 2 years being a short time from drawing board to showroom, the new Impreza styling was completed in just under an hour.

But seriously, the new X-type has the potential to be the car of the new decade. It coule be the car that brings a genuine sports-luxury car into the reach of most of our pockets (given Jaguar's depreciation record). Sadly though, I feel it won't quite reach its potential.

Given that Ford own Jaguar and that the sportier versions of Jags are badged 'R', how appropriate it is that the sporty version would be an XR!

I hope you're right about the new Jag fulfilling its potential. I am not overly keen on its looks personally - but then I thought that the S type looked ok but not special, and that the XK8's rear end didn't look too nice. Every time I see an XK8 I think of the DB7 that it could have looked like. I did like the styling of the XK180 and the XJ220 though....

and??????? Like there's any comparison with a Lincoln to a Jag! The X400 is based on the Mondeo platform but that doesn't stop them from stiffening & modifying where necessary. Ford tried very unsuccessfully to produce a 4WD Mondeo but was canned after less than 1 years production due to poor NVH and severe poer loss from the engine. Using an existing platform is the obvious choice for reducing costs by a huge amount. The next generation Volvos will do the same but do you think people will think any less of them? I don't think so! Certain standards must still be achieved.

Wait a second! This whole build up about the new x type sounds very familar. In fact it sounds about the same as the build up for the very, very, very middling s type. The s type is special in no way, and in every way represents a typical ford product. How can anyone hope that ford will create a car at the pinicle of chassis design, let alone quality??????

Think you are a bit confused........Jaguar design and develop their own cars..........Ford provide money. Would you also say that Aston Martin? Any Jag on the road is a British product in every way - apparently we British are up with the best in the world when it comes to engineering - shame our Governments don't/haven't got the guts to support British industry. We seem to be turning into a production line for every other countries products!

If they can afford an Aston Martin they'd probably knowingly still spend the extra cash and get the Aston.

If money was no option (and I had to choose between the Jag and and Aston) I'd definitely get the Aston - looks a lot better IMO.

I did not mean to offend or imply in any way that the engineers at Jaguar are not some of the best around- I believe they are.
However I believe that Ford have strangled these wonderful engineers with middling chassis based of combinations of requirements meant to satisfy far too many populations, combined with the fact that Ford is not willing to build from the chassis on up to the unibody, cars as (expensivly) well built and with the same level of driver involment that the best of Germany and Japan have been able to produce. I know that if Jaguar formed an alliance with Porsche the story would be vastly different.

Sorry but the S type and the Lincoln share EXACTLY the same platform.

OOH and word to the wise..... it's gonna get worse.... Oh dear never mind.. BLMH used to call it "badge" engineering.

well there you have it folks............ shared platforms means identical cars! Just don't tell Aston Martin DB7 owners their cars use a Jaguar XK8 platform - they could have saved themselves £45K!
