Can anyone tell me the price of a new bottem end block complete for 2,0 sport wagon,99 facelift,66000mls with full sub service history,Makes you wonder why you bother regular sevicing as the car hardly goes anywhere,Start up on a morning ,quiet knock for about ten secs,then goes,Any Help,suggestions or sources for a block would be appreciated as the days of stripping down engines has gone for me as one problem always seems to lead to another bigger problem

 

I saw a chap selling a bugeye 2.0 normally aspirated engine for £600 I think, it's still in his car and can bee seen and driven prior to sale, removal from his car after sale

also could just be ya heads tapping a bit untill full of oil, engines will go well in to the 100,000 miles doing this.

so aint worth messing with it.

 

A guy at the local garage recommended an engine flush and using a magnatec type oil but im not sure if this is recommended,or a bottle of wynn,s oil additive,Something to do with the crank being in the middle of the engine wher most cars are at the bottom so it takes longer for oil to reach,Any response to that lads and as for the piston slap could this be corrected by getting the timing checked as it did start shortly after getting the timing belt done so you may have a good point there craig,might take it back to neashams on tuesday!!!

Do not flush the engine either!! No engine should be engine flushed ... unless it was with cheap oil and flushed that way over a few 10's of miles.

Magnatec type oil? not sure what that would do??

Ignore the 10 second noise ......... it will go on, and on, and on like that!

piston slap is common on scoobies. It's caused by the pistons being slightly too small for the bore until they've warmed up and expanded, if it is slap it's nothing to worry about


edit: it's not going to be piston slap on a sport!

 

Why not? Do they use different pistons in turbo and the non-turbo sport engines?

 

Sports also suffered piston slap. They are different pistons (different compression ratio, but are of the same design)

But it would generally last alot longer than 10seconds, and typically wouldn't start until AFTER 5-10seconds of running either.

Worth changing the oil and filter, do not flush it though and do not use additives. If the oil has lost its viscosity range, then it could well cause knocking on start up as oil pressure takes longer to build up. Crank, as with any other engine, is in the same place. Just the cylinder heads are at each side of it instead of on top.

Can't give further advice as one man's "knocking" noise is another mans "tapping" noise

neashams are now a subaru dealer which is why i used them for service,so surely they would use the correct grade,they did the t/belt in nov and as it got colder the knocking appeared and for some other reason it started jumping out of high range,hmmmmm ,also think the timing may be slightly out as its not tickin over as smooth as it used to

 

if the noise started after the timing belt was changed,that would be my first point of inspection...... belt tensioner perhaps?,wouldnt contemplate an engine change at this point until it had been fully investigated,poor tickover might suggest the belt timing has slipped or not been set correctly in the first place
