The steering wheel will not affect the turning circle

I have a 2001 WRX and the turning circle is shocking!

I always thought it was due to 4WD.

Just have to live with it and take it into consideration in tight spots

It's not brilliant. But it can turn as tight as many cars...such as Rover 25, Pug 307 HDi, Clio 172 to name a few small cars that poor turning circles.

BMW 3 series on the otherhand is excellent around ultra tight Spanish underground/multi-story car parks (thanfully).

I always thought that it was intentional to prevent tyre scrubbing. My Quattro used to skip on tarmac on full lock, the Impreza is much better.

It's a fundamental limitation of cars which deliver power via the front wheels (and by definition all 4 wheels). There is a limit to what angles CV joints can transmit power through. RWD have no such problems, hence tighter turning circles (e.g. London taxis).
