However when I rang them again, in '02 I think it was, they then recommended 5w-40. Not at home at mo so not quite sure of second date.
I have used 5w-40 since. Totally standard btw.
Make, type and spec is your choice so long as it meets Subaru recommended spec as a minimum.

5w40 is a bit thin up at opperating temperature, better for the turbo IMHO but not as good for the engine
