Oil Change
Just wondering how often the engine oil in a UK MY98 should be changed and what type of oil is recommended.
I've been told by several people that Mobil 1 should not be used.
Has anyone else been told this?
Any help would be appreciated.

Mobil 1 standard is warned against. Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w-50 is highly recommended and amongst the top 3 oils that folks use on here I reckon, myself included.

Sticker on mine says "every 7500 miles or 6 months whichever is the soonest"
I do it every 6000 miles or 6 months.
If your car is modded or you rag it a lot, I'd change it at least that regularly. Some people change it every 3000 miles.
I've just done a trackday and I had an immediate oilchange even though it wasn't due as consistent high temps, such as on a trackday might knacker the oil up a bit.
Better to err on the side of caution IMHO.

I change my oil every 3-4,000 miles.
I use Castrol RS 10-60w during the warmer months, and Mobil Motorsport 15-50w during the colder months.
Always use an OEM filter! I've heard some bad stories from people using cheaper alternatives!

I use the genuine article as well. I have not witnessed 'accidents' before myself, but have had it on good authority about a couple of failures with alternative filters, 1 involving a scoob depositing it's oil 10 miles down the road after a change, not due to misfitting either. For the sake of £10 for your pride and joy, why even risk it?

Checked my oil t'other day and, 4000 miles since the last service, the oil is very dark, but not quite black. Does that necessarily mean it's lost its viscosity, or is it simply due to contamination of some sort? I'm changing it anyhow, but am just curious.

If it comes out looking very black and has the consistancy of treacle then its naffed but if its just black and you have only done 4k its doing its job fine
