Default Big bhp Subarus + Trackdays

Why don't I ever see any of these cars at track days? Well, if I do see them they are not going as fast as the bhp would suggest.

Most of the fast Subarus I've seen driven are pretty std (remap etc rather than internal engine work)?

Why is this? I guess it's not just Subaru's either......maybe all big bhp jap cars.

My own personal opinion is that 330-340 is the best figure for useable track use. A lot of the big power stuff is probably so laggy that by the time the boost kicks in you are already at the next corner.

Litcho has been entertaining in his cars. I have to say he is probably the quickest i've seen on my travels.

Hope he doesnt read this and his head start swelling .......

On second thoughts I hope he does and the offer still stands Ian, lend me a spec C and I will put some decent ring lap times in

Big BHP is used on drag strips, fair play to them, but this does not float my boat. The other use is for pub talk I recon as I have never seen any over 350 on track.

One of the fastest Scoobs I've seen on track was a MY03 PPP with coilovers and AP 4 pot brakes. Goes to show where the advantage lies (think he may have had slicks on as well).

Davyboy.

Rob who we had dinner with at the ring last year owns the tangerine Evo (400BHP) the skyline (700bhp) and the caterham (300bhp) ..... oh and the monster truck (400bhp)

When I spoke to him in the past he explained that the skyline was a monster BUT for a circuit car just too much power. There is just no way to balance it on corners and corner exits. Get it on a straight line and it was quick. Indicated 180mph on Dottinger Hohe. The EVO is however a good quick track car and pretty quick from what i've seen.
Both cars weren't driven by Rob though, he gets Sooty to do that bit

300Bhp Caterham?? You got any more info on that? (eg, engine and gearbox etc)

I will try and get some pics of a Dax Rush (sp) with a 330bhp Vauxhall engine fitted. A friend of mine built it for his mate, is very impressive!!!

You should always be in the revs on track! Lag should only be an issue on the road!

Davey what do you have in mind regarding big power? 400+? Suspension, brakes and driver is a large majority to the package than an extra 50 hp/ton. But I think you know that already

Noise limits...that's the big killer for the big power Scoobs, well those with 500+ brake

Although Mikee's car with Kev driving was pretty impressive at Tuner GP

I'm working on my exhaust system so that I'll be able to enjoy some track days

Oh and Davy, some of these car's have been to the 'Ring you know...just ask Ben Lovejoy

You may want to consider the cost of a track day to the big power cars too.

Andy, Paul, I, and some others are using over 3lts of fuel a minute when on the power, and tires, and breaks won't last too long either. You also need to take into account how the cars are set up for drag v track.

I really miss the Donnington days, but that was when we could do an open pit Donnington for £85.00-£105.00, and £5.00 of that was to pay to have Tires Northampton there !!!

Track days are no longer a relatively cheap day out, and I'd guess a cheap one would cost us circa £500.00.

I'm not a Drag racing fan, but at least it's a cheap way of competing, and having some fun.

Whilst the cars of Andy, Paul, Haldor, Mikee, etc' are drag orientated, don't be fooled into thinking they will be slow on track !!!

Lag, is subjective, and these cars are pulling 2 bar of boost from below 4000rpm, to the red line.

there are fast ones out there but on the whole most of the jap stuff is found on the qtr mile and drift circuit. I still don't think the japs in general don't produce the fun and fast circuit cars like the europeans do, rear wheel drive would be a start and NA engines with a focus on the lighter the better would be the way forward....hence caterham, radical, porsche, bmw etc etc etc

Ah the good old days Always familar friendly faces & cracking service from Mark, Elvis & the other tyre N'ton boys. I remember taking one of them for a few laps in my red 99 car on the full GP circuit and managing to spin on the hairpin on my slowing down lap Picture even recorded in some dodgy car mag of the time so I can't even deny it

You're nothing till you've spun on the ring..................however you have to be special to do it and not hit anything

You'd still get lag. Lag is the gap between flooring it and the turbo spooling. < 3000rpm isn't so much lag but more being out of the powerband (i.e. the turbo doesn't operate much until 3k).

You're halfway round a corner and you wanna add just a bit more power immediately, high powered/tuned turbos aren't great for this. You want a very linear and progressive powerband on track to go proper fast round the corners.

S2000 is great on track, as is the NSX. But granted, they are the exceptions.

This was some time attack thing at Rockingham last year.

Fastest car was a stupid bhp escort with an experienced race driver. Car number 3 was a std 380 bhp GT3RS....3rd by .08 sec! I bet all of the cars on that list had more power than the third place car.......I think the 2nd place car had 300bhp more power!

BHP in reality should not be a decider of how fast a car can be around track (or limited). Saying a x bhp car is the best (or what ever) is not really relevant, as when on track (and if you are driving to suit this style of descipline) you will be in the higher rev ranges most of the time, working the gearbox all the time, which in reality means lag should not really be an issue on big bhp cars........ the biggest consideration is obviously the way the car is set-up handling wise.

Granted but as long as you are in the revs and max boost is available, then how it is delivered is more dependent on the mapping and the right foot, rather than the nature of the turbo. IMO

As Mark said it's all down to cost...I pretty much gave up on the track day scene here when the entry costs doubled...100quid for a day at Donington was acceptable, considering I'd use about two tanks of fuel and an oil change (my slicks lasted for years, and the pads still seemed to last around 10k miles despite 3 track days). That was when my car was running 350 or so brake...it's been off the road for nigh on two years now while I put in a new engine, I have every intention of tracking it again...but the costs of a day have spiralled, and I don't mean in terms of fuel use/parts, I mean insurance and event costs...drag racing is sooo much cheaper it's untrue!

Once the car's running I'm going Hillclimbing and sprinting with it, at least that's still vaguely affordable.

Whereas my insurance policy used to give me trackday cover and included the 'Ring, I now can't get trackday cover included and the 'Ring is specifically excluded...

Oh and I'm sure we'd all love to own a GT3RS...but at 70k and the associated costs of running one? Forget it, I'll stick with my 5k Subaru and 10k's worth of mods

I agree with Dave I can't remember any REALLY powerful cars on trackdays we did last year. Hopefully there will be some more this year

MX5 - Probably one of the best handaling cars you can buy for the money.

And Iv'e seen them tracked, very quick with the right mods
