MY99 V reg 2.0 turbo 5Dr -turbo fault? help?
UK supplied MY99 V reg 2.0 turbo 5Dr. Mileage: 118000 miles.
After a 70 miles trip and a week sat standing, the turbo is not wrking on my car. still drives ok but no power after about 3000revs will still rev up to 6k whatever but takes a long time to get there! Car is totally standard and due to mileage do not want to inflict a high power upgraded turbo on the old thing as worried if it will cope. Is it more likely to be wastegate or tubo?
Anyone has upgraded their standard or other turbo's and have a suitable one lying around from a low mileage car or new please let me know including price wanted. Spare new air flow meter?
my car went into the main dealer today to find out why the turbo wasn't functioning. The findings were as follows:
1) Air Flow meter (Revs dropping whatever that means?) faulty. Replace. Part number 22794AA010 £70.70 +labour +VAT. This will apparently melt the pistons if its not replaced. Would not cause turbo symptoms though but may have helped damage turbo due to overheating?
2) Starter motor noisy. Remove and clean or replace.(think i'll give that a miss!!)
3) Possible turbo or wastegate faulty (probable casue of turbo loss). They apparently couldn't say whether it was definitely faulty unless they dismantmed the turbo etc to inspect but the engine was too hot after their drive (even though they had the car all day!). They said the whole unit has to be replaced if found faulty as wastgate is integral part of unit, not available seperately if it was that. They said it wouldn't be the boost solenoid as doesn't tend to fail with no boost. I asked what model of turbo it was, TD04 etc and they didn't know, said they'd never heard of those types of numbers but part number required is: 14411AA261 cost £974.92+labour+VAT. Labour £95/hr.
Any suggestions, comments? help?

Does indeed sound like a possible issue with the wastegate, did they check to see if the actuator moves at all?
As long as the car is standard it will be a TD04 turbo, which you can pick up quite cheap 2nd hand. Two on ebay at the moment for less than £100
Do yourself a favour and go to one of the independant scooby outfits to get the work done. Someone like scoobyclinc, API impreza, extremescoobies, Zen, etc... You will get a better job for less money

As long as the car is standard it will be a TD04 turbo, which you can pick up quite cheap 2nd hand. Two on ebay at the moment for less than £100

Do yourself a favour and go to one of the independant scooby outfits to get the work done. Someone like scoobyclinc, API impreza, extremescoobies, Zen, etc... You will get a better job for less money

your car is an my99. They are reknowned for dodgy mafs (Air Flow meter )
If this is faulty it can restrict you running to much power (sending incorrect signals to ecu). On this year of car people change this on a regular basis, just to be safe.
I would change this (2 min job to do yourself) and you will probably find that it solves all of your problems.
From your symptoms as well, I would'nt recommend that you drive the car (if you have to, keep it below 3000rpm)

Scoobyclinic are highly recommended they would even find a 2nd td04 im assuming to cut costs if your strapped for cash or want it as cheap as poss.
Why pay dealership prices > clinic £25 Labour/Hour

why do people keep saying its the turbo??
All the symptoms point to a maf, the main dealer has said this needs replacing,so it makes sense to replace this. It is a common failure on this year of car. Start with the cheapest thing to replace and take it from there.

The MAF failing will not stop it producing any boost what so ever as he described. Replacing it will not solve the the boost problem. However it is very important that the MAF is replaced ASAP as well.
The chances are it is just misfiring//hesitating badly over 3000rpm which may give the impression of no boost.

Got a new MAF today but can't get the old one off, what are those 2 strange screws? ive got something similar but these have a pin coming out of the centre too so you cant get the driver in. Weher do i get a driver to fit, anyone??

Car sorted. 70 quid in local garage to reconnect the wastegate actuator rod (cause of turbo loss)...worth every penny! It is now twice as fast as its been for the 8 months ive had it. the MAF must have been gone all that time i had it. It's like having a new car...immense. Thanks for all the help guys.
