No, not how to test etc - brain hurts reading all the Mystical Rituals!

Just want to replace it for safety, and need to know a good supplier for a new one, at none ripp off prices (£86+?!). Some one here said the one on a Nissan Mirca is the same - really?! Think we had a SubaruParts4U, but can't locate.

The cars is a Classic STi.

What age of classic, though mate. I have a spare one here, that works fine.

 

It's a '99 STi. I assume your spare unit is a used one? I am most nervous about used units as we simply can't tell "how well it's felling" - or can we? No, no, ignore that - the brain will start hurting again!

Actually, friendly Dealer just advised to use WINNS XTreme(?) injector cleaner first. You see, mine doesn't hunt or anything - just heads towards stall. Also, cold start is fine (revs stay up till warmed).

Lambda sensor would cause good idle cold and low idle warm.

I had the above prob and it turned out to be the Lambda

I have a new one spare if you need (PM me), also have a maf which was only on the car for a couple of weeks.

I have a brand new Lambda. This all started with advice here that the MAF should be replaced as a service item anyway - mine's 4yrs old, this dipping RPM, so thought why not.

I like your feedback on the Lambda - though supposedly we get "use to it", acceleration is noticeably sluggish/not crisp.

I will do the Injector cleaning and see how it goes from there.

I remember (could of dreamt it though) reading a post a while back where Bob Rawle said he was doin some development work into supplying MAF's for the MY99-00 cars. Dont know if he has done yet though.

Do you have a direct number or email for Bob Rawle? It's just that the other partner always gives an impression(?) of extreme arrogance. I'd be keen to find out what BobR has done - always heard high regard for him here.

Will do. Plus, when I work out what the real cause is (i.e. after warm up, rev to 3000, declutch, it nearly stalls) - mind you, MAF is the orgininal (now over 4yrs old!).

anyone knows the price for a my98 GT? sometimes the rpms drop to 400 or 300 and then goes to idle. probably the maf?

 

I don't quite follow your last sentence?

Anyway, I presume this is a Continental-EU model? Not sure if MY98 is a Hotwire or Film MAF. Best check with a dealer - unless someone here knows?

 

I was trying to say the idle sometimes doesn't stay stable, so I think the maf must be damaged... a friend told the admission manifold could be dirty?

 

Changed the MAF and all is back to nornal and well. Following may be useful to some of you:

1. Friendly dealer charged £75 (so, shop around)
2. He confidentialy agreed to connect the diagnostic (mine being an import) - Lambda, OK. MAF voltage showed "changes" but he couldn't confirm that would be the case under different loads, etc (just can't tell for certain with this "mystic" units can you??). He also "reset" the idle to 800rpm - said that's what it should be (mine's been 600 all along, quite stable.
3. I examined old MAF and it showed a fair bit of grime on the first opening (one near the Arrow mark). Small brush easily removed this - but with new unit in hand, I couldn't be bother swapping around/experimenting, etc. You might want to?
4. Now, looking at the unit (this is my first) I would call the "element" a flat metal/alloy - not wire, or "film"? (as I have seen refered to here).

5. Cleaned and "re-charged" the K&N earlier - then went for a drive. After warm up, oh boy! So crisp and gutsy!

AND, the little bugger has gone and re-set itself to 600rmp idle!
