lookin at my pads last night and the dont look too bad, but there is a horrible grinding sound at low speeds when braking...

how much pad should be visable if they are worn?

 

Iirc standard pads have audible wear indicators on both front and one rear pad.
Usually 2mm of friction material thickness is recommended minimum.
However make sure there isn't a stone or something trapped between disc and brake backplate. I've had that on other cars. Sometimes driving in reverse can release anything caught.

 

hmmm, drivers side has about 4mm but i can even see the nearside pad, which cant be good...

what would cause uneven wear? sticky piston?

anyway, ordererd some from asperformance adn was gonna take to kwikfit or similar to be fitted (how much will they charge?) but may do um myself.

although pointers would be helpful since ive not done such a thing since i was 18 on my mini checkmate...

Go in Technical Forums, Brakes Wheels and Tyres. Search on pad changing etc.
Lots of info.
Pad changing easy, if you're reasonably spanner competent.
If you're not and think there may be a problem, best get someone who knows to do/take a look.
Don't want brake problems on anything but on fast things like Scoobs Noooooo.

I've not worked on those calipers before.

Is there not a wire/clip at one end holding them in?

 

yea ive removed that, but the damn pins themselved are impossible to shift, the head is so tiny i cant tap it out...

 

You should be able to knock them out if nothing is holding them in. Use a multi-screwdriver (without an attachment) or similar + hammer

tried that, the heads just too small, ive manage to knock 1 a little bit, but they really tight.

think im gonna have to put the damn wheel back on and go and get some WD40, what a pain.

You only need to knock them out a touch and you should be able to lever/pull them out at the other end

right ive lever'd one side free so the pad is lose, how the hell do i get to the other side?

and (dumb question time) how do i get the damn pads out of the caliper (i dont have to take the caliper apart do i?

 

Once you have removed the retaining pins and clip the pads should come away?

 

no, they just slide of the back, I just change all Pads and discs on my99 turbo... the back pads are a ****er to fit

 

so should the pads just pull out?

they do rattle around but the whole doesnt seem big enough?
