Hi,

Just test drove a 1995 Subaru Impreza import and all seemed fine apart from a strange noise coming from the turbo every now and then. The dealer said this was 'normal' and was just the turbo kicking in. Have put down a deposit but am now wondering if I am just being stupid and this noise is something more serious. Am new to Subaru and would really value any advice from people in the know.

Can you describe the noise (yes, easy for me to say)

But a whistle, whine, rattle, knock, etc or what, does it increase with the engine speed.

Also have you driven any other scoobs, if so do they make the same/similar noise. If not test drive another couple for comparison.

The sound was a kind of whoosh of air being released. A poor description I know! No rattles or anything like that. Any thoughts?

 

does it happen when you change gears if so it,s probably a dump valve m8 if so nothin to worry about as most of us got em as well

Just a bit paranoid at this stage. Would you know what the bhp would be for an N reg Turbo WRX (import)?

im not 100% but i think its 218 BHP as standard theres more guys with a bigger clue than me in here maybe they could answer it more correctly

 

It is 260PS which is approximately 257bhp.

Going to get car in next few days. Am reassured by your comments on the turbo noise. Any thoughts on any intelligent questions I should be asking before I part with me hard earned cash?

ask the guy what fuel its been running on.

needs to be at least shell optimax (98 ron).

if he say unleaded run a mile.
