Default What Scooby can I expect for my money?!

Hi there people, been a member here for a while but not posted to much as I do not own a scooby 'as yet'. Nearly bought a classic shape one 2 years ago but fell through.
Anyways, now I'm looking to get one again.
I am currently looking around to see what I can get for me money and will be ready to buy in November/December time.
Currently I drive a new Mini Cooper which I bought new and is now 8 months old. When the car is a year old she will be sold and a scooby will be next on my drive.

Wanted some help/advise from you guys to see what I will get for my money.
I will be looking at around the £13,000 mark and no more.
My requirements would be that the car would be in sonic blue with gold wheels if possible. Oh, and has to be a UK car (not a import).
Not to modified for insurance reasons, and a tracker already fitted would go down a treat.
So what you think I will get for this money in terms of model, spec and age.

I know a few guys personally from here and will be seeking there advise to but, wanted everyone to help if possible.

Also, anyone have any idea on what insurance price would be?
When I get the scooby I will be 22 yrs old with 1 yr no claims.
But, I do have 1 accident to my name along with 3 points.

Thanks in advance people!

I know what your saying believe me. Already owned a tuned up 2lt mr2 twin entry turbo and I had 3 points and accident to me name then, so I know it will be steap. but I'm prepared to pay quite a bit! So any ideas on cost of insurance?

At the mo', £13k will get you a blobeye 03-04 WRX or a bugeye 01-02 STi. There are un-mod'd cars out there, but not usually ones owned by enthusiasts, so they may not have been loved quite as well, but may not have been driven quite as agressively

The insurance is gonna be the killer Under 25 with low NCD and an accident will make it very difficult to get a reasonable quote. Why not try some of the 'net insurers for some quote ideas (although I just ran a quote with some of the details you mention through Privilege and as soon as I chose a WRX they slammed the door, locked it and went home smirking).

I would think you'd be looking at 2K minimum, very probably more. To give you an idea, Liverpool and Victoria who were -at the time- very competitive for insuring scoobies wanted £1800 off me and I was 28 with a clean licence. No, no-claims though....was a named driver for 5 or so years.

Forget an STI - stick with a WRX.

I'd spend a good few hours ringing around for insurance quotes (avoid the net - speaking in person gets loads of cheaper quotes) and TRY to sound responsible

The classic UK turbos are group 17, compared to newage WRXs which are group 19 (STis group 20, I believe). Although newages aren't the prefered chav weapon, yet (gulp...). Also try sticking your mum or dad on your policy (if they don't have points) as it may reduce it.

FWIW I'd look at a one owner car - speaks volumes about it...and go for a car that is secured to the hilt - alarm, immob, tracker, blackjax blah blah blah - don't forget you are trying to look like less of a risk to the insurance company...

FYI, Blackjax isn't condoned by insurers and will void an alarms Cat1 status. Don't get me wrong, it is an excellent device and I have it myself, but beware.

I'm not sure this is correct. You won't get a discount for it, as -like you'd said-it's not recognised by insurers BUT as far as I know, it doesn't affect the vehicles cat 1 security status! At least Liverpool and Victoria were fine with it.

It may well depend on what company you're with though!! Best to ask!

Id start looking at £8,000 cars and keep the £5,000 for insurance! Even finding an insurance company who will quote you will be an achievement, let alone finding one to quote you a 'reasonable' premium.

You may be better off looking at an older UK car - something like an S - W reg, as the insurance is going to be a lot on something valued at 13K - some ( not all ) will lower premiums based on a lower value of the car, so you can get a bargain on the insurance.

Get an older car that is standard with a FSH - something that has been well looked after, then spend a few K of your money on upgrades to the suspension, engine etc... and get it exactly how you want rather than being stuck with something standard.

If you REALLY want to spend all the 13 on a car, then you can probably take your pic of anything over 2 years old - theres plenty out there - if you look on the subaru.co.uk website there is a link to all the official dealers, and you can search their stock to see what sort of cars you can get - they tend to be the most expensive, so it'll give you an idea of the most you can expect to pay for various years and models.

One thing to beware of with the insurance, esp with internet ones, is that they often whack a load extra on for paying it monthly - elephant wanted £400 a year more from me for paying in installments - Materquote who I went with only wanted about £80.

I'm 20, currently drive a new shape fiesta, but have my eyes set on my bro's new age wrx. I have been gettin quotes for when I'm 21, with 3 years ncb. The cheapest quote I've had is from 'Quote-A-Car' which came up when using confused.com. £3700! To a lot of people thats unaffordable but I'll be selling my fiesta and using the cash off tha to pay for my insurance <------ desperate for a scoooob! I'd say your nearly 'home free' if you can reach 4 years ncb and get 'em protected. I'll be the most consciencous scooby driver on the road! Smooooooooth

The other thing you need to consider if you're spending so much on the car and insurance is that they arent cheap to run or look after - if you're going to stretch to buy and insure it ( assuming you're getting a loan for the cost of the car ) you may find you cant afford to put petrol in it very often !

If you get an older car ( under £5K value ) you can insure it TPFT which will be cheaper, drive that for a couple of years until you get some more no claims and then look at getting a more expensive one.

Or convince your brother to keep his car, and just pay to get put on the insurance as a named driver and use it when he's not looking

Also ;0) - assuming you sell the Fiesta for enough to pay for the insurance - thats only for one year, what are you going to do for the second year as the price isnt going to come down that much ?

for an idea on insurance try www.elephant.co.uk, or www.adrianflux.co.uk
They have an online quote set-up, give you a real idea of what to expect.

I would say that you would be better off with a classic as the value is gonna be less, as most policies go up or down dependant on vehicle value.

Irrespective of insurance issues. If you are dead keen on a Sonic Blue UK car, then your only option(s) will be the P1 (and possibly the Terzo too). Later cars (new age) come in the WRC blue (similar colour). P1s can be had for around £13K but its back to the other comments... Insurance will be a killer. (Oh and the P1 has tracker / RAC trackstar fitted as standard).

OUCH! - I am 31 clean licence 10+ years no claims and my insurance is still over £700

maybe I am getting done? (any leads for cheap insurance greatly appreciated!) but I would echo others here - if you find someone to quote you you will be doing well - forget the car for now find an insurer...

incidentally - been looking at a newer scooby and the insurance was cheaper on an 03/04 WRX than on my classic 2000 Turbo

I am selling my scoob Impreza WRX MY04 in WRC blue with gold wheels as Im emigrating. The garage have offered 13750 for it but I would much rather it go to someone who would appreciate it and not see the garage make the profit.

Not really much help though as I have to sell next month and its not a P1 or STI so sorry....

Quote A Car were one of the cheapest when I was looking for insurance - Masterquote who I went with were about a tenner cheaper, so I imagine you're not going to find anyone who'll insure you for much less than £3500 if anyone.

I dont think anyone gets cheap inurance on an Impreza, even older guys with max no claims are still paying much more than they would for other cars - there arent that many cars that are a higher insurance group after all.

You may still be better off buying a classic in any colour and get it resprayed the colour you want. Mod it up, whack a private plate on and most people wont know its an older model - with the right mods it'll perform and handle as well as a later car, plus you wont have to worry so much about it getting stolen ! ( imagine how much your new quotes will be if you've had a car stolen the year before !!!! ).

As I posted before, selling the Fiesta may pay for one years insurance, but then you've got to pay for next year as well, plus running costs, loan repayments, servicing etc...

Dont think Wagons are cheaper, if anything it'll only be 1 insurance group lower so wont save you much.

Only cheaper option is to get a Sport as they are a much lower group.

Thumbs up

Go for an older impreza for now... You can get one for £3k upward! - faster than the newer ones

At that price you can afford to insure TPFT (just drive 'a tad' more carefully than fully comp - remember any claim has to be someone elses fault ) I checked TPFT on my renewal ~£250 compared with £450 for fully comp...

Also limited miles helps, I have max 5k on my policy

Try all this you may find you can buy and run an older impreza for the price of a years insurance on the latest hyper-rocket - and you'll have just as much fun - less pose, but more cred

He was addressing another poster who said they own a fiesta which they will sell to pay £3700 worth of insurance.

Sounds like a p1 would be the obvious choice of car for you, try tesco, unlikely to be under 2k though. I once paid £1900 for a year and regret it, I now stick to £1000 max for insurance (£750 just now), I fancied an s2000 but they were 1300 so didn't bother.

Sorry - getting posters confused - a Mini is nearly as bad as a Fiesta though - everyone will still think you've borrowed your mums car !
