Thinking of chopping in my 2004 Civic Type R for a new WRX Wagon with PPP. Are they any good?

 

Probably best not to take one for a test drive...

Fanbloodytastic, they do pretty much everything you want them to do. The boot's not massive but it's big enough for most thing's, i can get my dog's in the back easily enough, use it for w**k all week, then go and play at the weekend's, the only one (slight) downside is the fuel consumption, about 20mpg, but overall i'd definitely reccommend them to anyone.

 

None of the local dealers have one in stock at the moment. Only been able to test drive saloon version - the wagons are not very popular apparently. Cant think why would seem to be the ultimate sleeper - my favourate sort of motor.

 

Forgot to ask whos best for insurance as most companies I have spoken too do not seem to know what the PPP is.

Liverpool and Victoria are pretty good for scooby insurance, just make sure they note that you have the PPP when you get your quote.

Most people seem to get the saloon as they prefer the looks (more like the rally car I suppose) but the Wagon is the more practical choice.

Very practical car and will carry more than you think with the seats down. My Wagon has enough space for me, the Mrs and the 1 year old when going away... and still has plenty of get up and go.

Not got PPP. I'll probably wait for the warranty to run out and then de-cat/remap

Thanks Guys. Good to know that it is practical enough to fit all the nippers stuff in the back! Have a 16 month old myself and CTR can't cope with all her gear. Thinking of the crystal grey with 18" OZ 10 spokes in anthracite. Cant tell if the combination will work as the Subaru colour swatches are pretty poor!

 

It looks good in crystal grey: a bit more discrete, if that's your kind of thing. However, we tried to order one but the dealer -- who was offering us a very good price -- couldn't lay his hands on one. Can't comment on the colour/wheel combination.

On insurance, L&V seem to have been good in the past and OK now if you're renewing an existing policy. They wouldn't touch me and after a few worryingly high quotes, I got a very reasonable one (considering) from the excellent guys at A Plan in Thatcham. A quick search in the insurance forum will provide testimonials, sample quotes, and the phone number.

 

Wagons not popular !! Dealer only wants to sell you his old stock probably.

Wagons haven't got the 'blistered' arches, are taller, narrower (body & track) and heavier than the saloon. Some prefer it's looks (more understated) some don't, it depends on how much stuff you need to carry (not that wagons carry significantly more..!).

I bought my saloon when my son was 10 months old (now 18 mths) and we can get everything we need for a long weekend away, even the massively bulky M&P pushchair..!

On colour, I went for WR blue as that's what I've always wanted and it looks TDB, however, when I have another I'll probably go for white. With the anthrecite wheels and red calipers I think it would look ATDB...!

 

nice front spoiler on the wagon, is it the sti spoiler, already have the fog lamps.

Front lip is a Scott Lowe WRX jobby.... colour coded of course. Scott does a separate lip for the STi's.

I took my Wagon to Power Engineering with the Hants Rolling Day a few months back. I was shocked to get... 260BHP / 249lbft at about 6200... with only a Ninja BB ! (not posted the graph yet)

Did you get yours RR'd before doing the PPP? I'm just trying to gauge how close to 260 my wagon might be.

The only other body mods from new were the waist spoiler (roof one is standard fit), front mud flaps, rear aero splash guards & stainless steel rear bumper top guard.Oh & Pentagon Supaglass security window film.


That's spooky cos there are a few cars that are "Standard apart from minor exhaust mods" and running power & torque above & beyond what you would expect.

Jimmy from Scoobycity had a standard 03 WRX saloon with just an afterburner backbox and he got 254BHP & 241lbft Torque. He also ragged his from new - no 1000 miles @ under 4000 rpm for him.

I didn't get mine RR'd before doing the PPP as it was on from new.These are the two runs I have done though for comparison :-

Optimax - Hot 28 June 03 - 4,000 miles - Run in < 4,000rpm for 1,000 miles.
247 BHP @ 5,806 RPM and 239 LBS/FT @ 3,300 RPM

Optimax - Cold 15 November 03 - 8,000 miles - Run in < 4,000rpm for 1K miles
253 BHP @ 5,904 RPM and 252 lbs/ft @ 3,200 RPM

I have now done 25,000 miles & it feels like there is more there than on my last dyno run.So the Prodrive quoted figure of 260 BHP is in sight.The mid range torque increase is the gain you notice the most in everyday driving.

Thanks for the reply. I agree the PPP does more for the torque response than the overall BHP.

A lot of owners at the RR day were as shocked as me and wondered when I'd got the remap done .... but a few were not surprised. "Nice new tight engine" was the main response.

I'd like to have the PPP, but it's just a little too dear for me. Why can't Subaru have a 50% off PPP sale? then I'd be interested.

I'll think I'll wait till the warranty is up, and then go the de-cat remap route
