The letter refers to "WRX" rather than "WRX STI", but suggests only some cars are effected.

Wasn't there a similar recall a while back? And I haven't got one - MY02 STi

 

There was an " unoffical " recall on these about a year ago, basically if your car was in for a service etc there oil gallery bolts were checked then. The rumour at the time was that there had been a couple of cars in Japan IIRC had caught fire due to oil leaks.
The fault only affect cars with AVCS so the WRX is not affected, anybody with an STi should check with their dealer to ensure it has been checked.

I got mine this morning.

this recall was launched in November 2004 so it seems surprising that it took them so long to get round to it.

 

Mines an 02 STi but not recieved any such letter. Only had the car about 2 months so maybe it was sorted when the previous owner had it.

Im guessing the dealer should know if its been done???

Just got mine this morning and have a question:

The garage who service my car are no longer official Subaru dealers, however I bought the car from them and they offer me better service than the local official dealer, plus they don't destroy engines on a regular basis. I know for a fact that the local official dealers send "difficult" cars to them for assistance. I have written to Subaru on several occasions asking what the situation is relating to having it serviced in what is now a non-Subaru dealer. They don't reply, ever, hence why I am never, ever buying another Subaru.

Anyone know what the situation with a safety recall is?

Got mine yesterday(02sti) Booked it in at dealer and dealer didnt have a clue or know anything about it.They then wanted me to leave it all day for a suggested hours work.They then phoned me back to tell me my car didnt exist on the subaru data base. After several calls they found it. This is a new dealer and i dont know if i want my car worked on by them now. They seemed to be a shambles outfit and that was just a phone call or two.

 

Had mine done in January when it was in for a service, but received the letter today.

If this is a potential 'fire risk' then they certainly have been sat on their *****.. surley the letter should go out asap.

 

Haven't received one yet for mine (MY03 STi), but looking at the list so far it seems I should.

Does anyone know how long it takes...is a while-you-wait thing or do they need it all day?

 

What is AVCS? I've got an STI bugeye but it is a Wagon and a JDM December 2001.

 

As a newbie scooby owner i'd like to know what AVCS us as well?? I have an 02 bugeye STi Type UK and stillnot received any letter.

 

AVCS = Active Valve Control System = Subaru's VVT (variable valve timing)

 

Where is the leak from in the engine area? can you see it or is it internal.

Finally recieved my safety recall note today. Got it booked in on 12th July.

 

It seems that there is a list of chassis numbers that will be recalled, so not all STi owners will get a letter. Probably no need for concern if the letter doesn't pop through the door.

I have also found out that my dealer, who is not a subaru dealer anymore, could do the job with no problem. He was able to get a copy of the details faxed to him. The job claims to require a special tool but this is just to ease access to the bolts, again he had no problems. With this in mind I see no reason why it can't be done by the garage you currently use to service your car. Oh, and despite him not being a recognised subaru dealer any more he also does my warranty work with no problems. Worth considering in view of the many respected and well liked dealerships that Subaru have recently removed their franchise from. That I can see there is no reason at all not to use a garage you like and trust despite what Subaru would like you to believe.

 

Something that might be worth mentioning. My recall notice was sent to me by the previous owner as he is a family member. Even though i bought the car about 2 months ago and have the V5 in my name/address and have had my name and address put on the dealers system it never came to me and was sent to him 3-4 days ago.

A card was sent so the previous owner could change the details. Address if anyone is interest is:
