More burble needed
Have got an STI backbox fitted to my 01 wrx, with the centre silencer and cat removed, however I'm after a bit more of the flat four burble. Could I achieve this by cutting off the tail pipe and welding a straight through pipe on in its place? Or is removing the downpipe ect. the only way? not so keen on doing this due to emmisions and cel
Thanks Paul

, I have only removed one and it passes the mot no probs. My original question was........ if I cut the tailpipe off will I get more burble? I know I can buy another one

Removed the one in front of the centre silencer. I just thought with the backbox I have, the outside dia. of the tailpipe is 3", inside it narrows to about 2" which cuts out the amount of noise coming out? Hope you understand
Just thought if this was cut off and a 3 or 4" straight through tube was welded on it would increase the noise?

If you're after something a little more subtle (both in looks and sound) than an Afterburner, I can recommend the Scoobysport/Janspeed backbox. It's a stunning piece of kit and is just about loud enough at idle and when pootling about, but it bloody roars when the car is driven "properly".

It was just something someone at work had done to his MGB, he had bought a powerflow backbox and changed the tailpipe which had changed the sound. He seemed to think I could achieve the same with my STI box, something to do with the flow of the exhaust fumes coming through a straight through pipe.

I would either just leave it as it is or buy a new backbox.
If you want to do it on the cheap...remove the backbox

Hey mate,
I also have a centre decat plus silencer replacement pipe on my MY01......
but I also have an afterburner vortex!
The sound is awesome
I had a power engineering backbox on it before (without a centre decat) and it sounded nice and burbley.
I reckon it'd still sound good (but quieter) if I were to put this back on with the centre decat and silencer replacement pipe in place.
I'm looking to sell the Power engineering backbox for £100 if you're interested (paid £280 new).

Not sure m8, I thought the STI might give me a bit more noise but hasn't really done the trick. Does the Power engine one give a noticeably burbly
sound? Dont really want to splash more money on one thats quiet right.

The STI backbox wont give you any more burble over the standard peashooters as its not a straight through design like most (or all) aftermarket backboxes, its designed to keep the car pretty quiet.
My old Power Engineering backbox gives a sound comparable to the likes of say a Scoobysport box, i.e. it's not stupidly loud, but you can certainly here the burble. It makes the car sound as it "should".
That was how it sounded on the car before I had the decat centre on there remember, so I'm sure it would sound even better on a car with a decat centre.

The box is in good condition.
Must've done about 5-6k with it on.
