hwo do they get this finish on the exhaust ?
This is a titanium exhaust system - or a "look-a-like" finish.
We are currently developing one.
The up-sides are strength, temperature tolerance and weight reduction. Good stainless steel will last a bloody long time, but good titanium will outlive even the best stainless.
The down-side is cost.
But beware.. there are many systems out there which claim to be titanium but are not 100%.
We are currently developing a titanium system. You usually only find titanium systems on the absolute top end motorsport sports cars, etc. If the cost is prohibitive, we may only make it available in small runs for those that really want it.
In the real world, the performance benefits are the reduced weight - which means sharper handling, quicker acceleration / braking and more grip.. plus the temperature tolerance which means the characteristics don't change as it gets hot in the same way that stainless does (although to be frank, stainless is pretty good also).
Genuine titanium is for the absolute purist / perfectionist.
But as you say.. doesn't half look the muts also!
Cheers

To achieve that look, surely you only need titanium plating? IIRC it's caused by different thicknesses of some oxide of titanium?
PS: SdB, I'm not sure that the weight saving of a titanium exhaust system over a stainless one is that great. I think skipping the three Weetabix in the morning would show a better weight saving, and it would be cheaper, too

rofl re weetabix. Valid point.
Weight savings of tiny proportions are of vital value in motorsport.. but agreed, the difference on the road is marginal. Like I said, it's only for the absolute purest / perfectionist.
Also, agreed only need to be plated.. which is why I said to beware

pslewis is more than likely correct.
When extremely high temperature is applied, it turns that colour. Rapidly too.
It takes a bit of practice to get it just right. Why not get the oxyacetylene torch out later?

Think they achieve this on stainless by getting it very hot.

4stringMike is correct in what he was saying about getting it hot,you have to make sure it is very clean and free from greasey marks.

I remember seeing the titanium exhausts used by the Mitsubishi Rally Team - I think they were about 5 grand each, so that sort of backs up Simon's point about cost!
