Default 1 week old and it's blown up... !!! :(

I don't believe it... after just one week of ownership, it's gone and died...

I noticed two days ago that on cold startup there was a puff of blue smoke.. !! Exactly what I was gettin away from with the escort...

So tonight (30mins ago) I came back, 20 miles up the M5 and didn't even reach 70.. (9hrs drivin an artic can do that to you..)

Got off the Mway and for the FIRST time, I took it over 4krpm, and at 5.5 it stuttered and stopped accelerating.. It's now running on 3 cylinders and there loadsa smoke coming out on tickover.. (not a smoke cloud whilst drivin tho)...

Is this the 'typical bang' i've heard so much about on these 99 uk cars..??

If so, what exactly does the 'Bang' entail..?? Cracked rings, melted piston, bent valves...

How much is it likely to cost, and do you think a warranty would cover any of it.. (I doult it, but just checkin)

I simply aint got the funds at the mo, not after buying it just last week, but I need a daily car or i'm screwed...

I'm soo gutted...

Hard to say for sure what could be wrong from that description. But warranty should cover engine failure I think (engine isn't a comsumable item like clutch or brake pads), i take it you've got the Subaru extended warranty? If not then it could be very expensive.

If so then best getting it in to a dealership for a look.

If it's not covered by warranty then a decent independant engine specialist like APIEngines will probably be a fair bit cheaper than main dealers (and do a better job).

You must be absolutely gutted, I know I was when mine went.

If you have a warranty on the car then there's no doubt it should be covered. It's not unknown for warranty companies to try and wriggle out of engine rebuilds claiming 'inadequate lubricating oil' or similar, but as you've only had it a week there's no way that excuse should stand up.

Best of luck getting it sorted. If it turns out to be terminal, then at least, you'll end up with a nice shiny new engine.

SOrry to hear about your tale of woe

On the MY99, the typical cause was a faulty MAF sensor (oxygen sensor). IF it's this then the resulting damge to the engine could be anything from a piston to the whole block.

This is what happened with my MY99 (they day before I picked it up from the dealers!!! ) - piston went - new engine

Either way, you've got your dealership by the danglies, as the car has been in your ownership for such a short time. IIRC, you'd gone to a 3rd party dealer, not a Subaru dealer. Correct?
It may mean that the warranty claim may be a little bit tougher - the virtues of a non-subaru warrantee......

The upside, as others have said, you'll have a brand new engine

Hope you get it sorted quickly - but don't let this incident sour your Subaru experience.

I had similar symptoms although I didn't notice any smoke..... my boost control valve had to be replaced...

Dealers have legal responsibilities for the cars they sell - often more than is generally realised and, of course, they generally keep stumm about it. The days of "bought as seen, no Warranty given or implied" do NOT apply to trade sales. It's probably worth a quiet call to your local trading standards to get a feel for where you stand (or to someone like AA). I am not saying this will sort it for you but forewarned is forearmed. IMO it has always (a whole 8 days) felt a bit 'Surgy'... !!! With foot down it kinda pulls in waves, altho not that noticable.. ?? And it responded ALOT better to barely any throttle input.. Infact putting my foot down made it slower than Pauls escort estate.. ???

I just thought this was normal-ish.. I was hoping to get to PS soon, let them take it round the block, and tell me if it was ok..!! I guess not..


I'm ringing Trading standards in a minute (back at 2) to see where I stand with a '3 month mechanical warranty'... but even if the garage stump out, i've gotta get it down to taunton yet..

I'm just numb at the mo..

Assuming that the engine's demise is not attributable to you; then the dealer is responsible. Warranty terms and conditions wont be relevant as the warranty will only start after the dealers period of liability ends, which is still nearly three weeks away. Irrespective of how the dealer reacts Id advise you to confirm / make them aware of the problem immediately, in writing by recorded delivery. You may be able to reject the car completely and this may be the best choice as 're-built' cars are far more likely to fail again. If the dealer proposes to have a new short engine fitted by a competent firm who'll flush the re-used parts properly then you may well be better off keeping the car.

bare in mind if you do get the engine rebuilt to find the cause as apposed to just havin it rebuilt, a mate of mines had 2 rebuilds under warranty as a result of faulty maf sensor,tho he had got a yrs subaru warranty with his,however they didnt change the maf after the first rebuild and it went again about 2-3mths later if this happens to you it`l be out of its warranty and cost you a fortune.

I was speaking with a Subaru service manager yesterday & he said that the classics that had engine failure were mainly due to maf sensors or lack of oil changes. He suggested regular oil & filter changes (3/4k) & the main reason the extended warrenty cost had gone through the roof was the amount of engine rebuilds being costed against it. A lot of classics also tend to let go around 70-80k (according to him)
