VF28 is standard install on STi5's which are 276BHP, they are quite happy producing 310BHP.

I just replaced my td04 with a vf28 and its well worth doing if like myself you just want a modest increase.

Mine pulls hard all the way to redline now

It will not spool as well as the TD04 but it will give more power once it starts to go.
With ALL the supporting mods it is capable of over 360 bhp.
If you believe what TSL say in the suplement in the current Jap Performance,"with a massive 1.8 bar of boost through the IHI VF28 blower. That equates to over 400bhp and 400 ft lbs of torque."
Remember some people exaggerate and tell porkies.

It will add noticably more power but you may miss the low down spool and it will need a remap to optimise the potential benefits.

My current spec is top mount i/c
full hks de cat
k&n induction kit
hks evc v boost controller 1.2 bar held
380cc injectors

Last dyno run with the same spec but a tdo4 produced 280 bhp, next dyno run on 19th march

The VF34 & VF35 are also capable of perhaps 350bhp, and are slightly newer than the VF28 (though not a big leap forward). Another option that I believe is very similarly sized, spool up etc is the APS SR30.

If you can live with slightly slower spool up and want a bit more power, a lot of people enjoy the Front Entry TD05, and the newly popular TD05/18G is meant to be a good variant of that, maybe capable of 400bhp.

Best of the lot for power vs spool up - but requires a lot more money in special headers, downpipe etc - are the twin scroll turbos.

Can't claim major experience with any of these, but you did ask what other options!

To get the most from a turbo upgrade it would be wise to do the I/C. If you're going for a VF28 you wouldn't go far wrong with a P1 / STi 5 I/C.

There's a nice looking VF34 in "for sale" and one on ebay too.

Andy, your injectors must be near max duty cycle? My 440's are nearly maxed out on my standard VF28 with TEk3, headers, decat etc.

i had a vf28 on my version 6,and blew it up..i was only running 1.17bar but this seemed to much.i spoke to turbo dynamics and they surgested that the 300 bhp that i had was possibly to much for the turbo ie.vf28=280bhp....i have now got a vf34hybrid,and am working within my limits......= speak to the pros,i would surgest a call to turbo dynamics.......p.s. i dont work for them, but i felt they were a great help.

If Turbo Dynamics say a VF 28 is only good for 280 bhp, it re-enforces my opinion of them.
A TD05 would be an easy upgrade for you. A bit less spool but more power overall.
As I do not know your full spec I cannot comment fully but your top mount will handle a TD05 satisfactorily, up to 300 bhp plus anyway despite the fact that I would like to sell you an FMIC.
E-mail me your spec if you want further comment.

I reckon the average VF28 could probably squeak 340 bhp if the supporting mods are ok, however they can't be run at 1.8 bar, just generates loads of hot air, as for 400 bhp from one then rotfl.

For a std engined UK car with tmic its a good option as is the VF34, the VF35 is "ok" in that is has a quicker spool but suffers from surge and boost creep due to the tiny turbine hsg it has.

As a best compromise between quick reaction and reasonable uplift (100 bhp for a UK car) then has to be seriously considered.

some thoughts

Bob, as I Mentioned earlier mine was running 280 on the td04 on 1.2 bar and with the VF28 it seems easily as powerfull running on 0.9 bar. I have clicked it onto 1.2 bar for a couple of trial sessions and it really does pull hard.

What are your thoughts on my 380cc injectors running the Vf28 at 1.2 bar, I would hazard a guess they are at max duty cycle, was thinking of upgrading them but I only have the phase 1 engine and non mappable ecu so would mean getting a motec etc??

Also I want anti lag fitted any ideas who can supply and fit this along with injectors and ecu?

Andy

Well my 440's are almost at max at 21 psi (STi5).

There are many other options than a Motec. Link / Gems / Apexi Power FC etc...

Although Motec and Gems will support antilag. Why do you want it? Doing some rallying?

As i understand it using antilag with any VF turbo would greatly reduce the life span of the turbo, as they are not the strongest of turbos.

the 380's will max out, however I ran my 440cc injectors in the STi5 at 126% duty to achieve 346 bhp at the time and there was no apparant real issue, not desirable, so answer is suck and see, I would suspect it will run lean above 5700 rpm which is pretty typical. there are 440cc or 480 cc injectors available that would suit, would prbably make the difference if you didn't want aftremarket management and with care and some checking could work.

Thanks bob, loks like I may just "suck it and see" with my current setup for a while and after my wedding get a gems/motec and some larger injectors

Thanks again

Question for Bob......

Would an uprated fuel pump and regulator be required for a VF28 running 440's on a UK MY00.
Or is this a 'follow the crowd' modification that isn't really required for a VF28 running just the right side of 300BHP.
