Finally got the v6 wagon back with the MD304 fitted. First impressions, although i haven't really ragged it (not until i get the ecu mapped) is that the turbo hit comes in a little later than before, but much stronger when it does hit.

Car is running about 1.2 bar. Will maybe increase this a little if the mapping goes ok.

Anyone else had similar experiences with an MD?

Oh yes, ran an MD304 (2nd one ever made) on my car for 3 years and 45k miles and loved every one of them Fabulous turbo, and mapped right it should give you 1 bar of boost by around 2.7k rpm and 1.25 from around 3/3.1k rpm. At least it did on my car (MY98 UK) with HKS FMIC and HKS Tubular Manifold using a 6 row Link ECU.

Eventually saw a 12.3s 1/4 at the first Scooby Shoot Out, only to be pipped by P20SPD with a 12.16 on the next run...using the same turbo

It was a great turbo for UK cars with a 7k rpm rev limit, the small p18 exhaust housing (as fitted to the VF28) is a little restrictive at the top end on Sti's capable of running to nearer 8k but it does have low end spool benefits. A larger P20 exhaust housing can be fitted (Which IIRC makes it an MD309) if your willing to loose some low end and make up for it at higher revs.

Good turbo, the whole TD05H-16G vs MD304 debate was a bit harsh, and based on historic cost, if you can now get either for a few hundred pounds you have done well

 

superb turbo, loved every minute of it (40000 miles). OBX headers opened the top end some for me. Graph below was with Gruppe S headers, and produced 358bhp flywheel and 337lbft torque. UK MY00 Wagon.

I was running mine around 1.4 bar mid range for the last 6/7 months (12/14000 miles).
The sti should take more.

 

Nice figures. Can't wait to get it all mapped together. My cars bored out to 2.2 as well so hopefully i'll be pushing between 360-380bhp, which is my power goal.

fecking hell, that should spool up very well, and should see 360 easy, with probably an equal dollop of torque.
