I have an 04 plate WRX STI Type UK. This thing has only 7,000 miles on the clock and already it has gone from being 25k new to being worth about 19k now. I am considering selling it because I dont like the prospect of losing another 6k on it in the second year and buying a decent Escort Cosworth where you lose very little if anything at all.

Does anyone know if it is just that motors lose loads in the first year or if scooby's are just not good at holding their money and will lose loads in the second year too???

 

Most cars lose 50% of the purchase price within 3 years.

 

It loses the vat as soon as you drive it out of the showroom, the priviledge of buying new I'm afraid. So thats the best part of 4.5k. Forget about this and you have only lost £1500.
Sounds bad and I was in exactly the same situation, but the reality is that if you want nice things you have to pay for them. Don't sell it, that would only make it worse, as the 4.5K loss would be over a short time, keep the car 4.5 years and the hit isnt so bad at 1k per year. I know it sounds like I'm fiddling the figures, but its right, and the depreciation should slow down. Scoobys are no different to any other car in that respect! Daz.

But it's still only a commodity! And how can you expect it to be different to white goods? The whole system is geared to the production and sale of new cars... driven by the depreciation and supposed obsolescence of the ones we're driving now!! No-one should buy a new car and whinge about the plummeting value of it.

 

I agree to a point, to the extent that whatever you spend on a car you should be able to afford to lose, as one day it will be worth next to nothing. That way anything you do get come px time is a bonus.
A scooby is a luxury after all, as a £500 fiesta will get you from a-b. 6k is a big hit though for a few months ownership, and I can see his concerns. Don't think its really a whinge though.

 

i bought a toyota anensis verso for our business i had it for 5months and i lost 5.5k. the scoob is different in one way it is a better car

 

If you want to avoid the depreciation trap, buy one year old cars. I'm not saying that you won't still lose a little, but for example, my MY03 WRX PPP would have been £22k from new. I paid £16k for it 1yr old, saving £6k, and it's probably still worth £15k-ish now. £1k/yr I can do. New cars are fine for those who can truly afford them, but for the rest of us, play the game wisely.

 

The whole depreciation thing is mostly dictated by the market, dealers and manufacturers. It does suck big time, but it's our fault cause we keep going back again and again.

It's like giving someone whos pi$$ing on you another pint to drink!!

Best way to beat it is to buy a car that's at the beginning of it's cycle and supply is less than demand - eg mini holds well cause there's a waiting list.

I try not to think about it as is just makes you feel crap. Enjoy the scoob!!

I was not “wingeing” as it was so kindly put. It was just a simple question that I wanted to ask other Scooby owners their thoughts. What I really wanted was someone to say that they had the same but in the second year it only lost a grand or something like that. And as for if I cant afford to lose it don’t buy it….what was all that about?? If people want to just have a go then what is the point? I also have a 52 reg BMW X5 so it is not like I cant afford it, it was simply a case of not wanting to lose that sort of money again in the second year.

 

I bought my 03 STI PPP. One year old and only 7.5k mileage and it cost me 20k 8k less than new (incl. PPP price)

Buy 1 year old vehicles to avoid the big loss

Doesn't really matter how much money you have, nobody likes to lose 6K!

In answer to the question - One year down the line it will be worth more than 13k so you wont lose another £6000. However it's unlikely you would get anymore than 17k for it one year on unless you were trading it in for a new scoob to lose the same again!

I reckon it'll lose 2-3k per year for the next few years. This would mean that in 3 years it'll be worth 10k which is about what an equivalent MY51 could sell for so seems to make sense.

On the bright side, I had a Mitsubishi Galant V6 sport estate before I got the scoob '53 Sti+ppp.

The cost of the Galant new was £22K sold it 3yrs old 42Kmiles @£6500 and that was a good price! depreation was vertical glad I didn't pay new money for it though.

At least that aint going to happen to your scooby recon IMO should be worth 11-12K at 3 yrs

 

Just got for my March 2003 WRX in WRC Met Blue with PPP, PFF7's, Prodrive quick shift, Prodrive spring kit, Prodrive gear **** and gearshift surround, STI side sil skirts, STI front bumper and corner splitters and STI fog lamp covers, colour coded grill. The car is min't and I mean min't, washed and waxed on a regular basis 23k miles £14,000 in px against a new MR300 EVO with 2,400 off the list price of that car, You see I still don't learn LOL . As others have said the WRX/STI are cracking cars and I have loved every minute of it!!

A while back I brought a brand new BMW Z4 3.0i, with all the bits and pieces I bunged in it the final price was £37,750!

I got divorced and we decided that we would let the garage buy it off us, now this car had not even arrived from the factory, we just ran it past the garage for the day the car would arrive, to have a cheque instead of the car.

The c**ts offered us £28k for it!!!!!!

After controlling myself and not telling them to F Off! I said, forget that, I will have the car.

Paid £19k for an '03 Sti, hopefully will not lose too much as most the loss has gone now.

 

This is what I was looking for....people telling me that the big loss is in the first year and the next two years should not be as bad.......better than some "people" accusing me of wingeing because I brought the subject up. It is just wierd when I bought my 52plate X5 diesel sport for £34,500 a year ago and now it is still worth around the same money!!!!

 

X5's and Mini's are the exceptions to the rule, but their bubble will burst sooner or later. The new Disco may knock some of the stuffing out of X5 sales, and the Mini is due to be revised soon so the old ones may well take a hit. Although, the Mini revisions are more a cost cutting exercise, so the originals may well end up more desirable unless BMW get it right (as they usually do ). Scoobs are just a 4 door family car that just happens to have generated a cult following due to strapping on a turbo and a few rally wins. Their strong points can and do become their weeknesses in the 2nd hand market. Ordinary cardigan wearers would never consider a car with such irresponsible performance, garish styling and boy-racer reputation, so the audience is somewhat limited to enthusiasts.
