is a hks filter bad for my 93 wrx?
i have noticed that alot of people say use the standard air box with a pannel filter instead. why is this? the car came with the filter and has caused me no probs so far as im aware. its the green mushroom type hks.

Most people will say be careful with induction kits due to MAF failures when such items are fitted. However these were mostly from MY99 onwards when the MAF design was changed, the earlier design was much more robust. I wouldn't worry at all about having a HKS filter on a MY93.

The only time I have come across issues with the HKS type filters is where a mini bonnet scoop is used as a cold air feed.
I had an HKS RSK on my 97 UK turbo and found that in heavy rain the sponge would get saturated and the car would start to run very badly with symptoms almost as bad as when you hit fuel cut. Changed to a Blitz SUS and never had the problem since.
The only thing I don't like about the mushroom design is that I have seen old ones where the sponge is not seated properly along the edge of the backplate and it is therefore allowing in totally unfiltered air, so that is something to watch for, particularly if you've had the thing apart.
Ensure that the sponge is clean and in good condition though and you shouldn't have a problem. Some people try to clean the sponges, but I don't agree with this practice. Replacement sponges are only about £20 and a "cleaned" one will never perform like it should.
On 99-00 cars ONLY they also have a bit of a reputation as a MAF eater, statistically more so than other induction kits.
