Smile New owner/member!

Just bought my first Scooby, to collect this Friday. Oh yes!
Always wanted one and the test drive clinched it.
2001 51 Plate bug eye WRX in blue 16K miles, mint. £11,500 dealer.

Questions for members:
It is standard apart from a Subaru fitted STI (prodrive?) back box. What difference will that make?
Are there any essentials to do/buy?

Cheers...

Same as mine only different colour - getting the PPP etc at some stage.

Still not sure about the lights though. Have the twin headlamp conversion which IMO looks better, but each to their own.

Almost 12 months down the line and still grin like an idiot from time to time...

Welcome to the club mate....

PPP = Prodrive Performance Pack which is an official upgrade for impreza's keeping the warranty intact and the dealers happy.

STi back box is a bit louder than standard but does look a lot better than the standard twin peashooter effort.

Midlife..... (the original one !!)

Congratulations! Welcome to the empty wallets club! In answer to your question, the most obvious difference the Prodrive backbox makes is to liberate the lovely flat four burble....you won't appreciate what a HUGE improvement this is over the noise from the standard "peashooters" i.e. twin exhausts untill you hear a standard car though!
It wil also give you a couple of extra horsepower and possibly make the acceleration feel slightly "cleaner" Again, you'd have to drive a stand car to appreciate this!

Best wishes

Are there any essentials to do/buy?
well, where to begin

engine: new downpipe (to increase torque)
new centre section exhaust (decat if you can)
You've already got an ok backbox, but you can improve that too.
sti panel filter
remap (www.brddevelopments.co.uk to release even more horses and much better mid range power delivery

brakes: uprated discs and pads all round (your choice)
braided hoses

wheels/tyres: your choice again, but don't ask about tyres, they are "very" subjective

that just leaves you interior and exterior mods to your own taste.

Its a slippery slope midlifecrisis2, last year I spent over 3.5k on mods and servicing, and thats not including petrol either!

But when you hit a bit of gatso free open road, and you put your foot down and watch cars disapearing in your rear view, it's well worth the hardship

chris.

Default thanks everyone for the advice and welcome

I kinda figured that midlifecrisis would have been gone already...nice to hear from the original. Looks like 'emtpy wallet club' might be too true. I sold my Honda Accord 'Sport' persuading the Mrs that the Scooby was a sensible 4 door saloon with similar mpg (ok my bugeye is the 'ugly friend', but we all know that they are the goers ;-) and wouldn't cost too much to run. Well, another 10 insurance groups and £350 to transfer the tracker (plus lifetime) and she might be getting the idea. Tyres are fine so I won't upset anyone yet. Twin light conversion sounds fine, plus more bhp when I can stretch to the bits!

had my bugeye from new (3yrs) put a scoobysport back box on 250.00 ,your prodrive one is ok though

k&n panel filter 40.00ish (well worth doing as you clean it rather than replace it at servicing, plus any numptie can fit it)

and today just had power engineering do a tek2 upgade of the ecu(if you dont know midlife its done on a laptop they just plug u in and turn on the fun!)

261bhp feels like i just bought a new car (got me grin back too)

how many ten grand cars are on the road that are as good ,try and name one!

oh yeah the stereo and speakers ,do your self a favour and buy one on the way home from the dealers on friday (actually while you are at the dealers get them to order you the forester single din pocket to go with your new stereo)

enjoy BUGEYES OF THE WORLD UNITE

(dislexics of the world untie)

doh i forget the doh i've spent on it:
morrete head lamps (380.00 would not have bought the car if this was not available)
brand new sti gold wheels and tyres(400.00 as cheap as buying tyres!)
complete sti interior (blue alcantara) 350.00 (out of a write off, like new though)

give us a pm if you want to know any boring stuff like servicing costs etc i've done 60000km in three years.

edited to say : 11.5k good price !

Try most dealers for the wheels and tyres - the dealer I spoke to had loads (although mainly WRX type) from people who went straight for the OZ or prodrive ones, depending on any allowance they made on keeping the old ones depends on the selling price.
I bought a WR prodrive rear box for £300 and had to "remind" them to give me the original.

Default Ecutek (remap) and full decat (new stainless steel zorst)

I know it's already been said by one guy on this thread but the 1st thing you should do is get a drive in a mates fully decatted (that means all the catalytic convertors removed by way of a brand new full exhaust system and uppipe/downpipe) and Ecutek (thats an ECU remap which will take into account the much better breathing exhaust) remapped WRX. The difference is almost night and day.
A few people said i was mad to do all this to my scoob when it was brand new but I have not regreted it one single bit. The car has been utterly reliable and never missed a beat despite the extra horses having been liberated. I drive the car (very) hard 99% of the time and have done several track days and the engine really is brilliant once the above works been carried out.

Estimate on spending about £1500 and your car will go from 220bhp to a healthy, free reving, better turbo spool up 285bhp.

DO IT !

Hmmmmm I did something similar to my 200sx so I know you are right. However the reality would probably be me smiling my way to bankruptcy.....divorce...etc... still ;-)
