Just picked up a set of prodrive driving lights for my 01 WRX, the fitting instructions seem to suggest you can wire them up either to main beam or dipped beam. My mate is convinced that it has to be the main beam only. I don't doubt him, but thought I'd check with the masses.

And Mark if you read this, I believe you matey - just wanted others to share your wisdom (oh how about next week for you fitting them - I'll bring chocolate biscuits! )

They are driving lights that'll replace the standard fitment fog lights. I was hoping they'd help lighten things up a bit as the morettes headlights are more design over performance imho and need some assistance.

By law if they are driving lights they need to go off on dip, but wattage is unrestricted when used on full beam.

 

You used to be able to get Cibie spots that had a dip setting too; these could be connected to both high and low beam, but youd have to make sure that headlamps can be fitted that low to the road.

 

Agree with Beastie but they must also be mounted the same height as the headlamps.

 

On the WR1's the driving lights only work with full beam.

I had similar to my last car (Cibie Oscars at 130 watts each), fitted by my Subaru dealership, and placed where the foglights are situated.

They wired them up to come on at full beam only, to comply with the law. They went off when my beam was dipped.

They also wired them up so that I could switch them out completely if I wished.

I had PIAA's on my last scoob, and NO WAY would I use them on dip.

They are so bright they undoubtedly would cause accidents

They were wired in to come on on main, but I could also switch them off independantly. They could not be switched on at all on dip, and rightly so.

If you think the Saxo boys are annoying with their fog's on, you'd really hate anyone going around with lights that powerful on.......

 

Driving lights rule. Lane hogs always get out of the way if you flash those in their rear-view at night.

Also good for "reminding" w@nkers that they have their fogs on ...

And yeah, they only come on on full beam.

 

Anyone know how much the prodrive driving lamps (replacing oem fogs) are fitted?

Thanks to everyone who responded - pretty clear now that they'll be wired up to the main beam. Think I'll need to look at replacing the Morette bulbs for better dipped performance - BUT i did notice an interesting thread on that in the electrical section - Philips Vision Bulbs got a good write up.

To the query on prodrive driving lamps price £195 from Subaru

 

Remember that if you up the wattage then the OEM wiring probably wont be able to cope.
