Unhappy Chugging on boost

I own an my99 uk turbo with 65k on the clock and more documented history than the bayeux tapestry, but i fear something aint right under the bonnet and would like a bit of help.....

On booost during hard acceleration the engine is chugging - I have a boost regulation valve that's been set to turn out a midges *** over 1.1 bar so nothing too heavy there - thats been fine for months.
I had it serviced last weekend and thought that new oil and filters would resolve the chugging but it aint...

Anyone know straight away what might be going on - or anyone local brave enough to have a ganders and give a formal diagnosis?

I've got well lane in a week or so and would like it back to its best for that???

Cheers

Sounds like det perhaps.. do you have a knocklink?

Try turning the boost regulation valve down slightly and see if it still does it

explain 'chugging' ?
could be a minor missfire under heavy load.
check the plugs & possibly replace .. or clean & gap them to 0.6mm and see if that helps.

Simons query about some sort of knock detection is a very good idea too.

You have Julian, but I was "entertaining" last night so couldnt answer the phone , and today have been in back to back meetings all day so not able to talk engines...

The chugging is just that - it chugs - lightly and repeatedly on hard boost, not like the engine is going to seize, just a chug so like Im not getting 100% power...
Spark plugs havent been changed since 1866 so it could well be that - worth a thought - but 2 hours labour apparantly... so £150 at Holdcrofts before parts or £100 at my local garage before parts... Wow!!!
As for knocklinks - well errrr if they are not a standard feature then no I dont - they sound nice though?? Whadda they do???

Julian - I dont mind taking you out for a drive mate - but it will either be Thursday night or Sunday (Im a busy lad - sure you are too!!)... I'll give you a call...We'll sort something

Cheers

Knock link is a knock detector made by LINK. its basicly a few LED's that show how much engine noise you've got. when you get knock (or det) it lights up like a xmas tree and you know to get off the gas (and somethings not quite right).

I susspect that you've got poor spark. if its working ok until high boost, then get them looked at. its not the easiest of jobs on a scoob, but with a socket set and and hour you'll be able to do it

to gain access :

on RHS:
Remove air box top section - clips & jubile clip - WARNING- the MAF is connected to this part and its V. fragile!
remove portion bolted to inner wing

LHS:
remove 2 bolts holding washer bottle
remove plugs and twist out of the way (sometimes you need to remove the washer pipe)

As you've got a 99, you doint have coil packs, so just pull the big red leads off.
plug spanner down the whole and undo. U'll need to play around with extension bars as its a bit of a reach & then the chassis leg gets in the way a bit

Steve

Cheers Steve - appreciate your time and comments and many thanks

I'll ask around locally to see if anyone can follow your instructions for me as I have the mechanical ability of a duck billed platypuss . I dont even own a spanner!! Cant believe I just admitted that .

Do Holdcroft's really 2 hours labour? Christ on a bike, I changed Rob O'Neill's spark plugs in half an hour with 2 stitches in my finger and a large bandage on!

Possibly not Rev - I seem to remember the labour cost being phenomenal though - my local place went for the 2 hour thing though and the prices seemed fairly simliar from mamory.
Julian through the power of my semi comotosed state of text we have sorted a time to have a go at doing this - speak to you later today - if I bounce you off its coz im in executive high flying meetings - of sorts??!!!

Ok Paul. Several things, now I found this thread! 2nd one is my favourite option though.

Change yer spark plugs, NGK PFR6B 's will do you, but about £35 !
Yeah, take about an hour to do, most of time fiddling to get at them or moving other stuff out of way!

You mentioned you just had oil and filter changed - at a garage - ... now that's a give-a-way!

Check your oil level - its the yellow rectangular thingy near the battery! If it is in or over the top hole when cold or the top notch when hot, then it is TOO full of oil, and the oil is blowing over into the inlet system and fouling your boost control solenoid and / or intercooler.
If so, get a garage who know what they are doing next time!!
To fix, you need to take off some pipe work and wash through with carb cleaner, including the boost solenoid. FAT boy should be able to do this on Sat for ya.

It's one of the two as you ain't changed anything else lately ..!

See ya 2 Dec or at Well Lane

Neil

Ohh yeah, if the plugs were recently changed, then maybe they broke your coil packs, if you have them ( probably dont) which would cause this when on load.

My experience of knackered coil packs is full epi-fit while on boost, there seems to be no middle ground (2 sets knackered so far, LOL)

99 - so no 'packs

you said it was chugging before service , yeah ??

i'd still go for plugs as a start (as a service on a subaru only changed plugs every 30k or something stupid as per Subarus schedule!)

go on, get yer hands dirty!!!! (or buy FATboy a beer or two )

Ahaaa! Julian Came over this weekend and changed the pugs for me - a set of NGK PFR6B's...
And now......... It runs like a dream! Hurrah! I have my baby back!
Thanks Julian - well worth the wait - enjoyed destroying an estate agent in a Z4 today on the link road... If Id have tried that a week ago the Ant Hill mob would have overtaken me!!
2 of the plugs that he took out were shot to ribbons... no wonder I was having problems!
Thanks again Julian!

Picture of the plugs? Depending what you mean by 'shot to ribbons', the plug may have been destroyed due to excessive heat caused by any number of things (but MAF is high on list if it doesn't have a green spot on it).
