DONT put the non synthetic oil in, it needs to be either the 10w40 semi synthetic or something like motul 300v 15w50 fully synthetic/Mobil 1 motorsport 15w50 or even castrol RS 10w60 fully synthetic.
These are your best options.

5w30 oil is too thin for the turbo charged engine in the Impreza, you need a MINIMUM of a 10w rated oil (the 5w rated heats up quicker, it also thins more so doesnt lubricate as well as a 10w or 15w rated oil, it also breaks down quicker due to the heat).

i've run Castrol 10w60 for 60.000 km before the engine blew (340+bhp).
During the rebuild i noticed that the Castrol is not the best for your car and has verry little cleaning dopes. The engine looked like a diesel and the oil looked completly burned and it was refrehed 2500km before the engine went. I'm going to use the 5w50 from kendal or the 15w50 mobil1. Both seems to be one of the best choices for an modded subaru.
Besides for the engine, the Turbo is not to happy with the Castrol either because it's a bit to thick say's a turbo (re)builder.

Castrol RS is not a true synthetic. It's a hydrocracked mineral. Agree with the comments on viscocity, 10W ideal for everyday, 15W if you regularly track.
I'd recommend Motul 300V or Silkolene ProS. Have a look for "oilman" on here as he sells both at good prices, and certainly knows his $h!t when it comes to oil.
