Default my scoob is f**ked any ideas

Last night doing about 60 and put the foot down.Loud banging noise from engine (only got to 70)and loss of power. Pulled up at side of the road and car cut out, when i tried to restart it engine kept cutting out. only way to keep it on is by reving it. Also black smoke fron exhaust. Its a 98 uk turbo and think my piston may have went any ideas.

It could be you've just popped a hose.

I've had the same prob recently, I had popped a hose between the turbo and the throttle body.

Take the intercooler off and check all hoses for splits and holes, failing that take the ic to somewhere like Sercks who can pressure test it for you.

my intercooler hose blew off on my STi5 - had exactly the same symptoms (although I thought it was fubarred at the time) - I bought some samco ones which were a little longer than the standard ones and it hasn't done it since!

Any of the above plus could be a coil pack or HT lead.

Still getting smoke?
any loud noises whilst engine is running?

If you're getting a lot of smoke, I'd start thinking it's a piston ring.
If it all seems fine, but just idles and runs like pants, I'd suspect plugs, HT lead or coilpack.

Question MAF...

Sounds remarkably similar to an experience I had.... !

Do you have an induction kit?

I presume that without 'revving' the engine it keeps stalling?
Try disconnecting the MAF... the car will run like a tractor (ECU will go into limp home mode).. but it should stop the black smoke and give you a bit of reassurance that nothing REALLY serious has happened!
Then.. rush out (or limp!) and get a replacement MAF.

Yes i do have an induction kit. Car will start but sounds and ticks over like crap. Would the MAF sensor going have caused a bang
When the engine banged at 60 i pulled over and the engine cut out. Then restarted it and had to rev it to keep engine on. had to drive about 50 yards or so to pull in at a safe place. The car was running like i had filled it with kangaroo petrol.
Tried starting it yestarday and it started first time just idled crap, never tried driving it though. Did not notice if it was smoking bad will check tomorrow.
Still waiting on a slot to get it seen to.
Thanks for your help will check the MAF sensor tommorow
