I worked as a car salesman for a 18 months and its the worst job I've had, maybe I'm too soft for it but its all hard sell sell sell. You'll need a thick skin and be able to switch your conscience on and off.

The margins we worked on were a small percentage of the 9% the dealership got from the price of a new car, minus extras and discounts you have given away. So if the car cost 9k the dealership got 1k, from that you take out the pdi and valet cost, any extra you gave on the trade in or the cost of the mats, flaps or half a tank of fuel are deducted from this 1k then you get your comission from whats left.

2nd hand was a flat % on the profit we made.
There were otehr little bonuses like we were also given £30 for each new car we sold ect.

This was 4 years ago and I expect each dealership network has its own rates.

I was one, it all depends on the deal you get and the other brands being sold in the dealership. Make sure there is some sort of luxury car at the dealership and make sure you get paid commision for extras.

I never sold an STi for less than £30k and the extras had a much better profit margin so i would double my commision.

If you tell me the name's of the dealers you are considering i might be able to let you know a thing or 2.

 

best thing mate get a job at Mcdonalds there you can be a Manager £35k better than being a salesman, sales exec, and also FREE FOOD

 

I would rather tell my friends I was an "Estate Agent" than admit to managing burger flippers .......

I understand that at a reasonable sized dealership and if you are any good you should be earning around the £35K mark ....
Basics depend on experience and will probably range from £16K up to the upper £20K's

 

I work as a salesperson (or sales exec) for a Jaguar dealership, if you can find a car dealership paying £16-£20k basic please let me know, the average basic usually ranges from £6-£10k depending on which franchise and what commision structure they have in place. You can earn good money depending on the dealership and their attitude to their staff and customers but be prepared for long hours, working most weekends and bank holidays and large amounts of stress.

 

Nowt wrong with being an estate agent mate

 

First hurdle you'll need to get round is whether they actually want someone without automotive experience that they need to "train"

you may be better off working for one of the decent car supermarkets - less fvcking about with customers haggling etc.
