SCOOBY MECHANIC URGENTLY NEDEED FOR ADVICE

how about a bit more detail and maybe using lower case where applicable?

 

I took my new eu import uk spec WRX into a well known main dealer for its first service, when i got it back i noticed it lacked power, greedy with fuel and the turbo does'nt whistle up the same as before also the inside of the tailpipe looks very sooty jet black thick soot
I could see the jelous look on the dealers face when i told him it was from the EU its a stunning looking motor

I wanna know what these jelous *******s have done to my baby
I have saved my money up for 4 years to buy this car and i am worried they have done something that will blow the engine

 

well imprezas usually run rich, this would account fo the soot on the tailpipe.

what mpg/miles out of a tank are you getting? these cars are not known for economy and if you are driving it hard/reasonably quickly then 220 -240 miles from a tank full is normal.

there is definately a change in the car it lacks power and as i said you cant hear the turbo whistle up as before the service, i fear the turbo is on all the time, or they have fu cked the maf sensor or the lamda, one of the hoses to the turbo does'nt look like its all the way home but i dont want to touch it in case i f uck it

No offence, but a main dealer will service PPP'd STi's, P1's and WR1's to name a few. I can't see them being jealous of a WRX. Take the thing back and get them to sort it

 

I was a mechanic many years ago and i know not to touch something under warranty maybe just a hose to you but f uck knows what it could lead to
Also as for jelousy its the fact that its a EU import and i was looking to buy one from this dealer but i went for the import

if you used to be a mechanic then you should know that turbos are not "on" all the time. is the car standard or has it been modded?

 

Read all the posts, if the dealer has made a mistake then the turbo could be on constant spinning itself to destruction with a little help form a overfuelling injection system

Did you buy a diesel? Otherwise the wastegate actuator duty cycle and target boost are controlled by a table of throttle position vs engine speed with no relation to any overfuelling that may or may not be there.

Try getting a Select Monitor plugged in by another dealer if you are unhappy. Check the boost pressure, air fuel correction, AFR on full boost and for fault codes.

 

I think you just blew some chances of getting help with that one.

Whats it idling at? How does it idle, rough or smooth?
Are all the hoses from the actuator to the duty solenoids plumbed in correctly? ie tight

I would suspect a leaking hose between engine and turbo, or a leaking dumpvalve.

AFAIK, a turbo cannot be on all the time. If it were, it would need to be electronically driven (ie a motor) which, if it was that easy, would mean there is no such thing as turbo lag. Given a turbo is 'driven' by the exhuast gases, surely it cannot be spinning all the time? And if it is, I suspect something is far more seriously wrong with the car if this is the case - as in serious death due very soon.
I'd be surprised that a dealer has done anything out of jealousy - no offence, but I suspect they may well see nicer cars than yours in there and indeed are so used to seeing cars day in day out, why would they be bothered...
Unless you did something to annoy them???

 

Turbo is spinning all the time the engine is on, even at idle, and although quickly, not quickly enough to make any boost.

My turbo spins for about 20 seconds I guess (not timed it) after I switch the ignition off - you can hear it. Long enough to turn the engine off and go round to the bonnet and be surprised at the noise the first few times when you are working under there.

 

LOL, you mean you dont have a switch John?

I have turned my engine off, got out lifted the bonnet, taken filter off, and can still see and hear the turbo spinning, and watch it come to a stand still.

as john says it does spin all the time but not enough on idle to give you any boost in fact there should still be a depression in the manifold. thats why you get the kick at around 3000rpm thats the turbo coming in to play.

I have seen this a few times when a perfectly good car comes out the dealer feeling sluggish.All of them where MY01 onwards cars.

I'm convinced the dealers are doing ECU resets as a matter of course on some cars, causing them to feel flat for a while but they pick back up after a few hundred miles (re-learn).

We proved this 4 weeks ago on an MY02 car with an Ecutek 3 remap that was great before the oil and filter change but flat after it came back,the dealer denied resetting the ECU.

On testing, the advance multiplier was back to default which proved they had, we then had to reset it again and get it back up to 16 at which point it felt spot on again.

perhaps they didn't pre fill the oil filter then..
b 4 i bought mine the workshop blokey i spoke 2 said they pre-fill filter etc, because the ecu detects the metal/metal contact noise from the lack of oil film as det and pulls the timing, guess it might be true.... ecu reset should fix it quicker... (didn't mention the damaged big end bearing problems, infact reckoned they hardly ever see any problems.. not sure i believe bit they always seem to be fixing/rebuilding them when i've been back there...)
