I did mine with Halfords CD2 engine cleaner. I covered the induction kit, top mount i/c, alarm and alternator and let rip

As a garage we recommend not to as the electrics can be sensitive to steam & water, though there are professionals doing this on a daily basis.

On a personal note I do clean the engine but very carefully & whilst I would never encourage this I have found green cotton filters come up a treat in the dishwasher.

Though don't tell the other half......

I once buggered up a xenon headlamp doing this once, it was a very bad day for me but the engine came up a treat though

A mate went round to get some CD2 from Halfords the other day, an assistant confirmed they had dis-continued it though. Whether this is true or not and he did'nt know what he was talking about , i'm not sure. You still may be able to get it elsewhere as it's really good stuff.

CD 2 users - It says not to use on tarmac - Did you wash it in the drive - or cover under the car somehow ?>

Ta,

Mark

PS _ Had some for nearly a year, never seem to get around to it - never sure how much to cover... Guess its just alarm, Alternator ? (Don't have TMIC - it FM)

back to the original question

It's fine to steam clean it, give it a spray over with concentrated truck wash first to break down the grease.

Just use your common sense - cover your alarm siren in a carrier bag and tie with an elastic band, if you have a cone air filter - do the same to that.

Aviod direct close pressure to the Intercooler, Radiator, coil pack, MAF, Ignition module/boost soloniod and inside the alternator vents. Do it with a warmish engine (not hot), and start her up straight afterwards, dry off with a compressed air line blower (if you have acess to it)

Results are as the pics above, Buy some engine bay lacquer to give a shine to any faded hoses or plastic (cover windscreen with newspaper as wind can blow the lacquer onto the screen giving nasty problems with your wipers. (silicone spray works too - but doesn't last as long)
